A while back the only use I found for Strigi was to slow down my computer and eat up RAM. Now that it seems to be doing things more in the background and not really intruding me when indexing my stuff, I've decided to see if it's actually useful at all.
Please note that I'm referring specifically to Nepomuk+Strigi, ie the file indexing and context-aware searching ability it's meant to provide. A few reactions: 1) The search in KRunner isn't exactly fast. There is a delay of perhaps 4-5 seconds before I get results. The results aren't exactly useful either - for one thing the results don't include items where the keyword is found in the filename (which imo is essential) but instead only includes items where the keyword is found in the content of the file. Also the results seem to be different from the results when searching via `strigiclient`. 2) The results in `strigiclient`, albeit an old and probably unmaintained program, seem to be the most useful as it actually quotes the keyword in the file in its full context. I wish KRunner could use this format too. Also the strigiclient search is instantaneous, so why isn't KRunner's? 3) The search in Dolphin seems to be good in that it also includes keywords found in the filename, but seems to be rather bugged. When changing options in the filters sidebar/panel, it seems to forget what keyword I told it to search for and instead just retrieve every single document/audio/whatever. At least Strigi isn't killing my RAM as much as it did before. Is anybody else finding filesearching useful as of 4.6?

There are bugs in the queries used by the Nepomuk Search runner. In fact, it may even lock up virtuoso-t in a 100% CPU cycle. Sebastian Trueg and Will Stephenson are looking into the issue. You can track the progress at Bug #246678.

Wow. I was wondering why after a period of time suddenly things would slow up so much until desktop effects would turn off without me even opening another new application. I guess we can rule out KRunner being useful until all this is resolved.

The bug is fixed. Ask your distribution to update the branch or to backport the fixes needed.

Gentoo doesn't backport stuff like that
![]() How does the rest of the stuff work for you though?

I don't use strigiclient, only the Dolphin search, and it works reasonably good for me.
