You can find links to the user and developer mailing lists here.
Looking over the posts, I don't know how close the release is. Just today there was an emailnoting that, when considering all the components, the new version takes up >900MB of RAM normally and over 1.2GB when indexing... When one of the developers says
Then I won't expect a release any time soon. |

I've periodically been checking in on the dev list, and there's an interesting discussion going on. First, there's an acknowledgement that there's a problem, then there's some responses. It doesn't look like a solution is near, but at least there's some life. It does look like they might release a new beta to demonstrate their continued survival. I think the real test will be to see if they say anything more publicly.

I disagree; this looks like a well-needed slap in the face/wake-up call. If they acknowledge that fear is a major component of not-releasing, the next step is suddenly clear: Overcome that fear. Looking at the blockerbugs, I'm not too scared about it - this is KDE 4.1, not 4.0. I certainly hope that they can come up with a RC-type release asap: I'm willing to use it as soon as the devs declare that it won't eat my email, and I can work around GUI/performance issues.
With KDE SC 4.7 still some time away, and Fedora, Suse, Kubuntu just about frozen for the next half year, this is the perfect moment to release something that a wider circle of early adopters can test and debug. |

Also waiting for a new release.
There is (was?) an attempt to bring a new beta out, but ftp.kde.org does not show it. http://osdir.com/ml/release-team/2011-04/threads.html I am really waiting for an even non-stable release, as there are some bugs/annoyances, that were fixed in the meantime. |

yeah, waiting for anything. kmail is currently a broken project; the lack of publishing *anything* about the project, as well as the lack of feedback acknowledgment from the developers makes it so. I'm not suggesting to push the developers to do things they don't want to do, for all I know this is their hobby. But if kmail wants to be relevant, it will need to address these shortcomings. Sadly, I'm only preaching to the choir in my spare moments, only hoping to catch the ear of a passer-by. |

I’m currently using kmail from Gentoo, 4.5.94.1 or so, and it works, albeit slow.
It just is a hell of a pain to get everything working together (which packages do I need directly from VCS to get kmail2 running, what else does it break, …). All those problems would disappear if kmail2 were to be released as part of the regular kde. Sure, there are bugs, but to hell with that: As long as they don‘t cause data-loss, I can live with them. |

You're saying that any and all bugs that don't cause data loss are fine? I don't know about that. Kmail already has enough bugs to make me consider not using it; if they introduce more without killing off some of the old ones, then that's a step backwards. |

I'm using kmail 2.0.89 for few months now and it works perfectly. I'm using imap and I haven't migrated from the stable version so I can't say anything about that - but it's fast and stable and never had any problems with it. Only thing that is bugging me is akonadi segfaults on restart:

I don't know whether that would be helped by this, but it has been said that if you start nepomuk and wait a while before starting kmail, it is more stable. I'm not sure exactly what that implies, as I think that nepomuk starts when kde starts, so I assume it must mean just give it a minute or so before starting kmail. Sheer guesswork.

I have just read that KDEPIM 4.6 Beta5 is today released to distros for packaging, so the next stage is just ahead.

Thx for the info! Immediately installed, runs fine, little bit more performant than beta4. Search and addressbook-completion in mail-composer still does not work for me.
