As far as I understood, there are still problems. So hopefully KDEPIM will be released with KDE SC 4.6.2. It has been discussed in this topic viewtopic.php?f=15&t=93925&start=15#p190782

Does anyone know when when KDE SC 4.6.2 is being released?

I think a month after 4.6.1 and two after 4.6.

I understand everybody is impatient (since 4.5 or before) but it is always (IMO) better to delay than to delete someone's data or something

You're absolutely right. Recently I'd lost my address book in kmail after upgrade (between 4.3 and 4.4 as I remember) and don't want it happens again.

Yes, you are absolutely, unequivocally correct. But the lack of communication is far less desirable. Ivan, I see you post stuff pretty often; I think I run across it on the planet maybe? Through your experiences, what insight do you have about this lack of communication regarding KDE PIM? When 4.6.1 came out I could not find a single word about the status of PIM stuff. That leaves a very sour taste in my mouth. I've come across a bunch of outdated "KDE PIM" web sites and I wonder why nobody seems to care about it, given the attention KDE in general usually pays to the project in whole. Am I alone here? |

Agreed. They could really communicate more. The problem is (from my POV) two-fold: - There are no fun news. We are used to blog about the new features, 'big questions' and similar, while posts like 'we delayed the release once again' are a bit boring both to write and read. - Some devs just don't blog. There are a lot of devs who do extraordinary work, but without any need to 'tell the world' about it. |

Some news. No mention of 4.6.2, but they say that the release is expected during 4.6 reign.

Sigh. Can't even find where to grab it from svn/git. I'd be happy to build it from whatever repository they keep it in...but whenever I google for it, I get links that haven't been touched since like 2005 and 2008. I need a solution - KDE is moving forward, and leaving KDEPIM behind; that's fine, their prerogative. If I'm keep pace with KDE, I need to have something to provide mail client at a minimum. I can't just continue to sit here like a fool after each release waiting for KDE $current+1, when "maybe kmail2 will be released." Do they really take us for simple fools who can be pacified in that way? I wouldn't switch over to thunderbird, nor do I like evolution. What are the alternatives? ![]() ![]() ![]() This is a problem, looking for a solution. Anybody? Bueler? Bueler? Bueler? |

I echo rickvernam's opinions.
I am now using Evolution against my will due to two problems Kmail has. First, it somebow strips newline characters from the outgoing mail, so it will be unintelligible for people who read it using clients other than Kmail. Second, Kmail still does not support Exchange. I've been able to get round that by using IMAP, but that's not a real solution. I am seriously hoping Kmail 2 will have at least the first issue resolved...

Doesn't look good. See Thomas McGuire's comments at 17:48:54 today.
If I'm reading him right, he says that it "might be optimistic" that "a final KDE PIM release is expected to be made during the 4.6 KDE release cycle" (first quote his, second from the post he links to describing the release schedule). I've already moved one of my computers to Thunderbird because Kontact is in a poor state (e.g. this bug, among others). Now I might just move the other one too and be done with this mess. |

If I interpret the mailinglists correctly, they are quite working toward a new (beta/RC) release; a meta-bug is being constructed. The past 2 months, people using kmail2 have become more and more enthusiastic I believe.
My unfounded guess would be a RC in May or so, hopefully to be taken up in enough distro's for enthusiasts to test, and a release in the end together with 4.7. Personally, I'm glad to wait that they take the quality of the release seriously; kdepim 4.4 will not vanish, and was working reasonably for me a year ago. But I agree, some feedback would be nice ![]() |

Where is this mailing list, where are the repos? I'd like to build & try, but my googleing skills are failing me. |
