Any idea why? I dunno how to troubleshoot this

also, im always able to turn it back on id just like to make sure it stays put.

Can you please define crash? Also, what graphics card do you have, and which KDE version do you have? The distribution version would also help.

it says desktop effects have been suspended by another application you can resume by pressing....

video card: ATI Technologies Inc M92 [Mobility Radeon HD 4500 Series] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

Im using kubuntu 10.10 which uses 4.6 i believe

Ok, try eliminating other causes of the problem by testing under a new user.

Kubuntu 10.10 uses KDE 4.5.1, unless you're using kubuntu backports or Kubuntu 11.04 beta 1.
