[SOLVED] KDE for a Gnome User

Sat Apr 02, 2011 2:36 am
Good evening community,

Was a KDE user in the 3.* days until the 4.0 release. Been on Gnome ever since. Now with Gnome about to release a goofy interface, and KDE is once again stable...I'm looking at moving back.

So Gnome 2.32.* -> KDE 4.8*....Any user experiences anyone willing to share?

XFCE is too light and not enough color customizabilty. I don't think a DE user's should have to manually edit .gtkrc files for a color scheme.I was happy in Gnome. Now, Gnome is going wierd. I've tried the beta, and I hate the Ubuntu Unity style interface. I prefer more traditional menu's, which are avaialable in KDE with the click of a check box.

LXDE (my current DE) is way too light. Respectfully, KDE is the heaviest of the bunch and it has been this heaviness that's kept me away for a few years.

Is there a theme someone can recommend, or a settings paradigm I can use to lighten up KDE 4.8?

This is not flame bait. This is a question, and a request for opinions.

Sincerly and respectfully,

Dave

Do you mean 4.6? 4.8 isn't coming out for another year. As for "heavy" or "light", you can turn off desktop effects. Also, with oxygen-settings you can turn off various animations. I am not sure which widget themes are the fastest.

Hello all and thank you for the posts.

Yes, on the 4.8..I was confusing XFCE 4.8 with KDE's 4.6.

I like the functionality of KDE, just like I liked the functionality of Gnome. And in particular, I don't like extra servers running in the background taking up CPU time and causing annoyance. For beginner users, these same servers provide functionality. For those of us who have been around since the ENIAC days (I just dated myself), we want something not so obtrusive.

The GIF's and the theming is exactly what I wanted to see. It just a matter of learning where the settings are in KDE, and turning them on or off.

THANK YOU very much!

This is very useful information - thanks to all concerned. As a KDE 3.5 lover, I have been happily Gnoming for over a year now (it is beautifully fast even on my older computers, even with some Compiz enabled). However, I too await the arrival of the Gnome Shell with fear and trembling and I share the original poster's concerns about the configurability of the lightweight desktops. 'KDE 4 light' could be the way for me to go, perhaps!
