i like the idea to create a user in my machine that should be focused on low ram usage and battery extension.
i suppose that reducing ram-usage could extend my battery i have disable nepo stringi akonadi disable kwin effects , oxygen animations now i could avoid the icons loading (could work ?) what could i do to decrease ram usage ? which are the minimum process to run kde ? my target it's this: create two users full-user low-ram could someone give me some tips to reduce the ram usage ? thank you ![]() right now i can use kde with 160mb used,i would like get ~ 80-100

Unfortunately you can't deactivate icon loading totally, although you could change the toolbar preferences (although the cpu + ram usage of text rendering might be higher). Many icons can't be disabled though.
To reduce the CPU usage taken by rendering icons, KDE uses a shared memory cache, storing pre-rendered icons which reduces CPU usage over time in exchange for slightly higher RAM usage. Ensuring that only a minimal set of Qt/KDE applications running on startup will also reduce memory usage (both due to less applications, and not needing to load Gtk/GNOME libraries)

today i have installed lxde,
and i have customized kde i guess it's the best choice for "low ram user" and "full features user" |

fwiw, I experienced absolutely no change in power consumption after having put another 512MB RAM in my Thinkpad T41.

i don't think ram usage has something to do with the battery.

make sure u have it set to "start a new session" at startup. that will help end old processes that are running in the background

i dunno but using lxde instead of kde you have 70 mb of ram used by the system instead with kde 170 250
and it seems battery can be used for much more time |

hmm I didn't know RAM usage could affect battery life. Can anyone confirm this?

RAM-Usage does not directly affect power consumption. But if RAM usage reaches a specific level, the system starts to swap. The hdd needs more power then the RAM, so this should affect battery. You can control when the system starts to swap by swappiness (google for it).
Putting more RAM into the system can also make the system swap later, but RAM needs power, so this affects battery runtime negatively (can't say how much). |

Has anyone swiched from kde to lxde? Could you give pros and cons besides RAM? I thinking about switching, but I always like others' opinions before I make a final decision. |

By disabling startup programs or reducing your games detail settings you use less memory
