hello guys,

i need to buy a new laptop and i would like to get one wich is combatible with kde, desktop-effects and opensuse - without endless tinkering - now that would be really great!

i know i'm lazy, but i'm prepared to pay a little bit more for that. (well price is no issue to be exact - i will probably buy a mac book pro 17" if this fails)

the laptop needs to have:
- high resolution with 17"
- 8gb ram
- small but fast hd
- dvi or hdmi port
- no bluray
- build in hardware supported by linux

i would like to buy in austria/germany if possible.

so any recommendations?

What is available often depends on the country. The Acer models in the UK seem to be generally compatible and HP tends to support Linux anyway.

So, for anyone interested:

I settled for a Dell Precision 6400 which I bought used and could test for some time before buying. It matches my needs nicely with:

+ 1920x1200 17" Led Display
+ 12gb ram
+ 320 GB 7200 HD
+ Dualcore T9900 3,06 Ghz

Opensuse 11.4 detects most hardware without problems, only sound needed manuelly via yast the model=laptop parameter.

Not working (out of the box)
- Fingerprint Reader (dont care)
- fglrx (I settled with the radeon driver, because compositing effects are working and are really fast)

Since 3 months I successfully use a

HP EliteBook 8740w Mobile Workstation

for details see HP online store
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm ... 38087.html
or search Google if above URL changed for "HP EliteBook 8740w Mobile Workstation"

HP offers the online option to fully custom configure your order to meed your precise specs. that's what I did to have my "dream" workstation for my full time web publisher job and remote server control. I do lots of image processing and love the 1920x1200px display with the ATI graphic card

I installed openSuSE 11.4 from download DVD and absolutely all HW I needed was working out of the box immediately during/after install - including wlan connection for updates during install.

I love 8GB DDR3 RAM and a fast 500GB 7200rpm drive with intel i7 quad core.

currently I use 3G broadband via my N900 - and these very days I am working to get the built in Gobi Qualcomm broadband working.

In 13 yrs of laptop-only use for my job (first yr desktop PC) this laptop certainly is the best of all by far. I always used top end laptops from toshiba first and later all acer. but the HP EliteBook 8740w Mobile Workstation is the only having full linux support
