Sony VAIO TR1MP Recommended Distro?

Fri Apr 08, 2011 11:19 pm
Im going to be buying a Sony VAIO TR1MP soon.
Reason why:
It is small and it has a DVD drive and a great res on its screen.
Plus it is only 10.6'' big.
I would LOVE to put Kubuntu 10.4 on it.
But my worry is... Would it run well?
Specs:
1GHZ (900Mhz)
768mB ram (Will be upgraded to 1GB)
80GB HDD
GMA 2 with 64MB VRAM (I think)
I saw it on The Social Network and it looked like it was running 3.1 KDE (So im also wondering wether I should install that on it when I get it).
Thanks guys :D

Due to the nature of the older Intel graphics, I would recommend disabling Desktop Effects to avoid issues relating to that, but 1gb of RAM is fine for KDE 4.

What about the 900 mhz Celron?
Im worried about it being slow.
Could I have Google Chrome open with 3 tabs and/or Gimp/Photoshop CS1?
Thanks :D

the thread would be better responded to if entitled "running KDE on a 900mhz Celron cpu - doable?" or something similar.

Chrome could have issues if combined with KDE 4 (due to memory usage), same with GIMP. Depends on the sites visited, the plugins they use, the size of images, etc.

If you are looking to use them extensively (with large images, or flash heavy sites) on a machine such as this, I would be looking at one of the lighter window managers.
