For work I use VNC Viewer to remote login into a Solaris machine. I have been using CDE for some time before some other guys in my working group introduced me to KDE, which I really like.
The problem is that I can only get KDE to start by manually typing "startkde" from the unix command line, in which case it simply is "on top of" CDE (like another window) and so when I use alt+tab to toggle between windows I have to cycle through CDE and several annoying background dummy KDE windows. What I want is KDE to automatically start up instead of CDE when I launch my VNC viewer session. In my /.vnc/xstartup file I have the line "startkde &" but it clearly isn't working since CDE launches by default. I've been trying to get kde to auto launch for a while now and I've been trying different things, including messing around with my ~/.DCOP* and ~/.ICEauthority files. I think the problem may be related to that, but the problem is that I don't know how to fix it. There's another guy in my working group, and he has the same .vnc/xstartup and .vnc/config file, and it works perfectly for him. So there has to be some setting or file difference somewhere, but I'm just too much of a Unix noob to figure out what it is. Any help? Thanks a ton! |

Having you tried changing the ~/.xinitrc file, or checking what the selection is currently for your user in the X Desktop Manager? (usually the login screen)

I currently don't have a ~/.xinitrc file in my home directory. I can't seem to find the system default one either. Where might I find it? Also, what should I put in there?
Thanks |

Simply placing the following in it should be enough:

That
That didn't work. How do I attach a file? I have a log file from when I started my vnc server session that might be useful. I also have a log file when I start kde manually. I have no problem starting kde manually, as long as I could get it to no appear as just another window on top of CDE. I want KDE to actually be my window manager, not just some application running in the foreground. That could also solve my problem indirectly. |

Figured it out.
Turns out my "xstartup" file wasn't an executable, just a text file. Did a "chmod +x xstartup" and problem solved. That's frustrating but glas it's solved! |

For future reference, we normally ask that log files be posted on sites such as paste.kde.org then links to the paste posted here.
