KDE 4 ..starting to be a dead end?

Fri Jul 15, 2011 3:25 pm
Hi,

I'm already using kde for a long, long , long time on desktops, on laptops, etc.
A few days ago I decided to also use kde on a laptop at work.
To be honest, I was very surprised, but negatively :o
I'm using the laptop screen and an external screen, and creating the 'xinerama' wasn't already so easy somehow. But anyway, that worked (using the last builds).
But the problems also started then..when using desktop effects, the plasma desktop just constantly crashes. (reminder: no problems with single screen). While they just said that they fixed a lot of issues with that.
That was already a big problem, but ok.. I could also disable the desktop effects, which I also did.
No need to say that somehow the graphics were ugly, and that it was very slow.

Then I also noticed that actually KDE doesn't support 'hardware profiles'. I undocked the laptop, and the kde was actually completely useless as it still thinks that there is another screen attached to it.
So completely blocked. How is this possible for god sake?

I really start to wonder if there are people in this world using Kde 4?
Silly things which are a must for a system (like dual screen) just doesn't work. A LOT of bug reports are opened, but most of the bugs just never get a response. (NEVER = really NEVER) Critical bug are reported months ago, but still didn't get any response and are unconfirmed

So I really wonder if KDE 4 is really still used by 'normal end users'? As it just seems to be impossible to use for a normal enduser.

The problem in this case as that most of the developers who work on the KDE Workspace (Plasma, KWin, etc) don't use a multi-screen setup - so it doesn't get much testing. I'm sure they would welcome patches that improve multi-screen support in KDE.
