Hello guys,

I'm having some problems with my Linux (Kubuntu) installation.
I deleted Windows more then a month ago and replaced it with Linux (finnaly) :)

After trying a few different distro's i ended up with Kubuntu. I like it, its nice to use and easy at most of times to configure, but its not very "stable" Not like i would expect from Linux installation..

-To start, its not as smooth nor fast as my previously installed windows 7.
I hope this can be fixed with some driver updates?

-Chromium won't start from time to time, the only way round this is a system reboot (after a fresh reboot!)
Before i was using Firefox and i had simular problems. Even Rekonq had problems, infact at one time i couldn't start none of my tree browsers. But after i updated some packages they where working again. But this is not normal, is it?

-Just today, my dolphin file manager kept crashing, also after a fresh reboot. So, again.. Reboot system..

- When i install a new file manager like "Gentoo", "Tuxcommander"
I can't open my media from inside the file manager, meaning:
If i double click on an mp3 file using Gentoo or Tux it doesn't start playing for some reason. Nothing happens.. Why?

-When i'm using Gtalk, and i want to use the webcam using the browser plugin that Google provides, it crashing every two minutes. So that means it not usable, and that means take my notebook with Windows 7 just to use the webcam..

-My NAS (dns-320) is not reachable from Kubuntu, it keep asking me for the correct login and pass. While i'm really sure the details are correct.
Is there a simple "net use" like command i can use to connect my NAS from the terminal?

-Is there anyway to disable animation screen when (k)ubuntu is shutting down?
I would prefer to see whats happing in the shell/terminal/konsole, rather than see "Kubuntu is shutting down" ... ... ... ...

So many questions, i hope somebody can en is willing to help me. All help would be really appricated.

My system specs are:

Abit kn9 ultra mobo
http://www.abit.com.tw/page/en/mothe...E=Socket%20AM2

AMD 5600+ Proc
Western digital caviar black 640GB
ATI X1800GTO Video card

Thanks in advance

so many problems

1st did you experience these problems when you tried the other distros? which verions of Kubuntu and KDE are you running?

the chromium and dolphin problems, can you start them in their own konsole window and see if any errors are displayed. you shouldn't need to reboot to restart these programs, worse case you can restart kde by ctrl+bksp, ctrl+bksp (need to doit it twice to work) but this shouldn't be needed either

mp3's - I think the problem is Gentoo and Tuxcommander. In Gentoo you need to get into the config -> commands -> definitions -> play_mp3 and somehow define an external player (the default is xmms which I'm guessing isn't installed). Suggest you try Krusader as an alternative file manager if Dolphin not to your liking

smoothness - suggest you use the proprietary ATI driver if not using it now, try turning off Blur effect if it's on.

Think the NAS q should be it's own thread

to see what happens when you shut down you can open a virtual console (alt+F1), login and then logout - I think you can turn off the animation but I don't know how

ps - sometimes it's better to post multiple threads especially if the problems included are not related

Wel no, I didn't experience these problems with other distributions because i didn't use them for long. I was using Vector Linux(few days) en Ubuntu(few weeks, but the UI from Ubuntu was driving me nuts.
But i can say: the webcam problem in Gmail was occuring with Ubuntu as well.

I will try to start my browsers from the konsole next time, and see if i can get any additional info.
But thanks for the tip "ctrl+bksp"

About the MP3's, i just had a look in gentoo but i didn't see the solution straight away. I will try again later when i'm home, it not straigh forward.

Alltough i'm using the Konsole for more and more daily tasks, browsing true my mp3 collection is still easier with a file manager like TUX, or Gentoo.
(i'm corrently downloading Krusador, look promising )
XMMS was installed, because i'm still searching for a good music player. I like Amarok, but when i want to open a new track, it puts the song in que, instead of playing it instantly. And i didn't see the option to change it in the settings.

Apperently i have a R520 Video card, so i have to remove the 'fglrx' driver and install radeon driver. I will try that later and see what happens.

I downloaded and installed krusador, and its perfect ! :)
Mp3 files play direct, so do video files. And it has the same controls like total commander (which i was always using before).

And Amarok is playing songs directly now :)

Thanks a lot for that!!

About the drivers, i downloaded a package for my video card from the ati/amd website.

But its not installing,

this is what happening:

*@Black:~/Downloads$ chmod +x ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run
*@Black:~/Downloads$ ./ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run
Created directory fglrx-install.JLIF5s
Verifying archive integrity... All good.

And for my chipset, Nforce 5 are no drivers at all on the nVidia website.

1) ati drivers - no idea as I use Nvidia but I'm guessing there's a mismatch between your installed kernel and the kernel the drivers were compiled against (my guess). This might help https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI

if you really want to use mc, in a konsole tab type mc

Re: Bunch of questions/problems

I did a memory test yesterday with the build in memory test tool (the option you have at startup) And it seems i have a lot of errors, 17xxx+.
So i don't know if this test is reliable? If it is, i have to buy new memory.

I aslo find out that my Motherboard isn't a great companion of Linux.

Here are some quotes i found regarding my motherboard:

"I had regular Linux crashes until I updated the BIOS. The BIOS from January contains some specific Linux fixes. Now everything is working great."

"S*cks on Linux. HD Audio is buggy, onboard network, MCP55 chipset still needs some time before it works well. You have to use 'noapic' boot parameter.

Other Thoughts: I don't use Windows, but if you do, excellent board."

And when u look on the BIOS update page:

BIOS ID:18

Update CPU micro code.
Enhanced compatibility with Linux.
BIOS compiled date: 1/16/2007

So hopefully this will do the trick;
Change the memory, update the BIOS and try update the drivers of my video card.

And about 'Krusador', its perfect!. Thanks a lot for that :)
Together with Amarok (that starts playing my songs instantly now) its really great.
My Linux experience is a lot more plesent sinds.

Just something else i would like to ask(i don't know if its better to start a new topic)

In Amarok, you have to option to play music from a database. How does that work?
You inject you music collection into Postgres or mysql and manage it from there? With query's?
Whats the added value for that? I would use it just to pratice my SQL skills but if it has other benifits i would like to know.
(I don't see anything on google)

re: your mcp55 mb chipset - it's probably an older post, so maybe not so relevant

re: Amarok db - by default it uses mysql embedded, regular mysql probably performs (somewhat) better with huge collections - how much better I've no idea Googling may help. Msql is the only optional backend in the 2.x series is mysql, postresql is no longer possible
