hi,
I dont think I'm alone in thinking about migrating to KDE after many years in the Gnome world. The upcoming adoption of Unity and Gnome3's predominantly netbook oriented interface is not my cup of tea.. and its the same case for thousands (if not millions) of Ubuntu users. But KDE is still too heavy - I dont want to install KDE and go about disabling Nepomuk, Strigi, etc to make it manageable. I also cannot (repeat cannot) use Konqueror for web compatibility reasons. Can we not have a KDE-light Software Compilation : with NO nepomuk, mysql, strigi, akonadi. Basically all that the KDE compilation comes with is a browser (Chrome or Firefox), Koffice, Okular. The system should have working wifi/bluetooth, printer and multi-monitor support. That's it... I daresay here that you can make a Kickstarter.com funding request for something like this and people will just jump on this. Opinions ? |

Akonadi and it's MySQL database will only start if an application needs their services. If you avoid the KDE PIM suite (Kontact, KMail, etc) then it will not start. If it does start, you may need to disable the Plasma clocks "Show events" feature. Then it should not start.
Nepomuk and Strigi can simply be unchecked in System Settings. Strigi is not enabled by default last time I checked. The system can function fine without either, although you cannot use the PIM applications without Akonadi, and Nepomuk (which is needed for search, Strigi is not required). As such, this is simply a couple of small tweaks which take ~2 minutes to apply. The browser in question that is shipped with your system is decided by your distributor. Bluedevil and Network Management supply a functional Bluetooth/Wifi system as far as I am aware. Multi monitor support should hopefully be improved in KDE 4.8. 4.7 includes a few fixes for it, but they are not 100% complete.

@bcooksley - thanks for the reply. Allow me to justify a S.C. rather than tweaking.
I'm not talking about one desktop - I'm talking about 50. And I dont think I'm alone in this kind of a situation. Hopefully if I can sell it, then we are talking a hundred desktops. I am not competing against Gnome - I'm having to compete people justifying Windows 7 and Macs - I dont want to go around telling people to tweak settings. I want to deploy KDE minus all the heavyweight applications - I dont want PIM, or semantic search or any of that. I just want the fastest, most usable desktop out there with just a browser and office. I hope the KDE dev community hears of this request - it is something that is sorely needed. |

Are there any particular reasons for choosing KDE as your Unity/Gnome3 replacement?
A couple of closer alternatives you might consider are XFCE and LXDE which are lightweight desktops reminiscent of Gnome 2. The main difference between them is that XFCE is a little more full-featured than LXDE, and that XFCE's layout is closer to Gnome 2, and LXDE's layout is closer to Windows (XP). As for browser and office suite, those are separate packages and just as easy to install using the software center as the desktop of choice.

@airdrik - thanks for the info. I'm looking for a platform that I can deploy safely in an non-tech office environment. Other than KDE and Gnome the other platforms are not fully featured enough for that - for example SMB/CIFS support, multi-monitor support, etc. all are highly desired. I would either stay on Gnome or move to KDE, not to any others.
also, point taken about the browser and office suites - however, a KDE-lite S.C. would still cover the other points I mentioned. |

In this case, you need to examine the changes the config tools make to your configuration files under ~/.kde4/ and ensure those are shipped as part of /etc/skel/

I think that the latest XFCE release (4.8) features improved smb/cifs support: http://www.xfce.org/about/tour. |
