Hi Everyone, I am pretty new to the forum, and pretty new to KDE 4.x. Was a Heavy GNOME, and xfce User, and One day I just switch to KDE Completely, with no transition. (Just like I did when I switch to Linux from Windows). After a few days playing around with it. I finally get my Desktop Setup the way I wanted. It is actually quite difference from my GNOME setup. I like both of the experience and things are just good on their own way. Customization has been always be my thing to do because well. It just making works flow so much faster. And making things looks prettier is simply a great plus to have. And in here I Thanks All Develop and Supporter to make KDE happen.

Short Over view:

Changing Name in Folder View will lead to Error, "old name" folder/file doesn't exit. BUG 270414.

Right Click while changing name in Folder View will crash the Plasma Shell, and you will get a black screen, (Every single time, in every possible setting.) (Can't find any related Bugs.)

Get back to business. There is a problem with Folder View widget, Whenever I try to change the name of a exiting folder or file. I get a error message, that said, the folder "old name" doesn't exist, and I think this is a known Bugs 270414

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=270414

But Things doesn't stop there, When I try to right click during Name Change. the Plasma Shell would Crash! And the Desktop would "black out". doesn't know a better words to describe it, but the whole screen just goes black, Things still running, Sometime the screen come back, and sometime doesn't. Tried both enable/disable desktop effect. NO good. Looking for a newer version of Folder View, No lucky. Tried every single setting, No help. I also tried to change the setting on Desktop setting to show Folder View, (The classic way of Desktop). Still happen.

When I try to create a New Folder, a little windows pop up, and allows me to enter the name. But when I try to change name. unlike in Dolphin, No window will pop up to allows me to change the name. Instead, I can change the name on the location of the name (just like in windows, GNOME, and xfce)just type is fine, but a single right click will crash the Plasma Shell, which pretty annoying. It happen in both KDE 4.6.x and KDE 4.7 and current running Kubuntu 11.04. I couldn't find anything related to this problem on Google or KDE community. Can someone confirm these bugs? I think, as simple as disable change name on icon, and open the pop window for name edit just like in Dophin would do the trick. I don't know, I haven't looks at the code. I mean that is what they did on Create Folder. So I assume it shouldn't be too hard. I mean I can always use Dolphin to change names. But... that is not the point here haha. It is a way too obvious bugs, and that cause some serious annoying damage on my option.

Anyone get any idea or workaround?

Thanks in advance.

Running KDE Trunk, I have tried to reproduce both Bug #270414 and the bug you have described. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to reproduce the bug.

This is probably the reason why the bug report has gone unfixed - it is nearly impossible to fix something without being able to see how it is broken.

Can you please provide information on the settings you have set in Folder View Settings > Location?

Yeah... I found this a little weird too because I search every where and yet, I cannot find a single related bug report, that has similar to the problem I encounter. And sorry for not give enough details. I will try my best to tell how I encounter the bug.

BTW, can you reproduce Bugs 270414?

my Folder View Setting:

Location:

show a place: (Desktop)

Display:
Header- Custom title: Desktop

Icons:
Sorting: Unsorted
Size: One step larger than default

Preivew: Images, JPEG Images, M$ Images, RAW Photo.., SVG Images, Video File(ffmpegthumbs)

Lock in place: uncheck

Align to grid: check

Icon Text:
Lines: 2 Lines
Color: White
Shadows: check

The rest of the settings are default.

I tried all the option in Location, All of them will result me the bug I encounter.

There are Only two folder with a URL: (linked to two mount points I have for my 2 internal Harddrive.) in my desktop folder. I am not sure what is the difference between a "Link to Local (URL)", and a "Basic link to file or Directory". I know one is symlink, while the other is not but beside that, not much a different. In my case they give me the same function. But I don't think they are the causes of the bug because I tried difference locations too.

The Type of this two folder: desktop configuration file.

(I used my Desktop as a buffer zone, to put all my temp/new stuff, then I organize them manually later once task is complete.)

Here is what I do, and what my intention. "In Folder view" I want to create a new folder on my desktop. When I first do so, a pop up window will pop and allows me to enter the name of the new folder I am creating. No problem there. However, Sometime, I put down the wrong name, or want to change the name of the folder I just created. So I right click on the folder I need to change the name of, click rename. And the Name of the folder would get high-lined. Then I can enter whatever I want. Once I am done, and click where else or enter to finalize the changed name. Bug 270414? happen. error: "The file or folder /home/ioky/Desktop/(old name of the folder) does not exist." But even so, you can still change name. (so Not too serious).

But here is the more serious Problem. While you are changing the name. Imagine you forget the long long name you try change the folder into. And you just want copy it from somewhere else and paste while you change the name. (I assume, I can right click, and a menu will pop up with the paste option) but as soon as I right click, the screen freeze for about a half sec or a sec. Then it goes black, and a BUG Massage pop up. saying "Plasma Shell exited Unexpectedly". if I hit OK, then sometime after like a second or two everything goes back to normal. However, some other time, the screen will stay back, but if you try to Alt-tab, you can still get some windows back, It is just that my "Desktop" is totally gone. I also try to switch to Folder view in Desktop Setting, Layout. Same exact thing happen.

In comparsion on Dolphin, if I want to rename a file or folder, I get a pop up window just like I have when I creating a new file or folder that allows me to edit the name. Right click to paste, copy, cut, no problem. But when I am in Folder View, while I am changing the name, I wouldn't even be able to see the right click menu because as soon as I right click, the Plasma Shell Crash.

Here is some of my assumption. (Can totally be wrong.) Either the right click Menu for editing name In Folder View doesn't even get design or got Called properly. Or the Plasma Shell have some structure problem. Or it has something to do with my Nvidia Card, using Nvidia Binary Diver. I totally don't know, just a guess. I would assume, it shouldn't be too hard to fix if this is the case. I think it can be as simple as give the pop up window for editing name just like in Dolphin, or when you first created a folder, because within that pop up window. You can right click, or do whatever.

Here is question I would like to ask. Can you even right click during your name change of a folder in Folder View, while the name of the folder is highlined and become edit-able? What would you see when you right click?

Someone (dant3, or something like that)on the #KDE IRC channel told me that is a Known issue, but like I said, I can't find anything related. If this is the case, what is the bug #?

I am using Kubuntu 11.04 4.6.3, 4.6.5, and 4.7 (All have this issue.) fresh install. tried in each version. In fact that is the exact reason why I upgrade from version to version. haha.

Try to reproduce the Bug, if you still cannot reproduce it, I will look for other Distro, to see if this is a Kubuntu problem, or KDE problem.

Thank you so much for the attention.

I have now managed to reproduce the right click on filename Folder View crash. Not an immediately obvious one however. I have sent an email detailing why this bug occurs to the developers.

Thank you so much for your attention and help.

After two week using it, Not I am completely comfortable with it, I think, the feature set of KDE4.7 is relative complete, It is time to fix all the little bugs like this, and makes it super solid and stable.

(Just a personal option to KDE. in fact to any "DE" out there.) Feature set is important, But for more advance, power user, who seeking for productivity. I think Now days DE is being over creative, and putting user in experimental field.
