I wanted to set up an /etc/skel so that new users added to the system would get some customizations of KDE configurations, like kwin settings and things.
What I discovered is that there is a ton of stuff buried in .kde and .config that embeds the user name or system name, so you can't just copy those directories to /etc/skel and have it work. If you try, logging in as the newly created user throws up around a dozen error messages when it tries to reference files it doesn't have permission to, from the original user you used as the template. I managed to fix this by hand, by a lot of grepping and deleting files (KDE seems to recreate the ones that aren't there the first time you log in). But there must be an easier way! If there is some easy way to do this, could someone point me to it? Otherwise, if there is no easy way, maybe I'll submit this as a suggestion: a single button you could push somewhere in system settings to copy some user's entire KDE configuration to /etc/skel in a way that would allow it to work properly. thx |

Kiosk Tool was a utility back in KDE 3 which could be used to perform setup such as this.
