Sun Dec 18, 2011 10:56 pm
I recently insalled Kubuntu 32-bit on HP ProBook 4530s (now it is my only system) and have some problems.System is so noisy, fan continously works,CPU temperatures are about 55 degrees.I can't install drivers for ATI Radeon graphics, battery lasts up to 2 hours, can't run synaptiks control centre for touchpad. All that concerns me.Any help would be welcome.

which version of Kubuntu?

Is this the first time you've placed linux on this device? If not then the earlier install did not have these problems?

If you dual boot what does the temp show in Windows? I think you'll find that 55 degrees C is within range for mobile chips, not sure exactly which processor you have or if that's high for idle, is your machine at idle?.

If you open ksysguard is there a process eating cpu that could the temp to rise and the fan to kick in and to eat battery?

Graphics - what are you trying to do? install a package? using what? are there any messages indicating why it won't install? did you follow this https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI ?

Synaptics - how are you trying to run it? from a binary or systemsettings? are there error messages? is the synaptics package installed?

If your system is a Hybrid graphics system, I would suggest you use the BIOS settings to disable the dedicated ATI card, and just use the Intel chip.

If your system only has the dedicated ATI card, then you need to install the ATI driver, as the proprietary driver tends to have better power management that the open source driver in general.

If it is a Hybrid system, with a Intel i3/5/7 chip, then you will probably want to enable RC6 on the integrated graphics as well.

Kubuntu 11.10.
This device has been pre-installed SLED 11.On SLED 11 all drivers have worked and machine was quiet, fan has worked periodically.
Kubuntu is only system on this device.55 degrees is temperature at idle (CPU model is Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30GHz).CPU is loaded with about 20-30%.
I tried to install open source drivers but it did not work and fan has worked even more strongly, then i have turned off switchable graphics from BIOS.Now switchabele graphics is stell turned off.
I trying to run synaptics from system settings because there are two icons:touchpad (there are some basic settings) and "synaptics" (simply can not run).

You need to install the proprietary ATI drivers - not the open source ones - which Kubuntu shipped with and will be partly responsible for the elevated temperature and higher than usual fan speed.
