just a few questions,....

Tue Dec 20, 2011 12:45 pm
hello everyone

I am kinda new to Linux and kde and I have a couple of questions:

where can I find the roadmaps for apps like kde telepathy, gwenview etc ? btw some of the pages in techbase and the community site are way too outdated.

why there's more than one or two applications in each category ? for instance, instant messaging, theres kopete (which is kinda dead but it still gets updated, dunno how) and there's kde telepathy, multimedia got juk and amarok, kaffiene and dragon player,...etc.

wouldn't it be better if kde comes with only 1 very decent and functional application in each category rather than lots of buggy applications ?

back to kde telepathy,Microsoft has just announced that an xmpp MSN protocol will be out in the wild,am not really an expert but it should be alot easier now to create 1 fully functional client now (kde telepathy) with video/voice call support and all that fun things, are these actually coming along any time soon ?

thats about it,my point is 1 decent native deeply integrated into/with the system application is better than alot of **** applications to choose from and since they all suck people will run back to their previous desktop environments/operating systems.

With regards to duplication:
Juk is a application released as part of KDE Multimedia, where as Amarok is a Extragear application which is released seperately from KDE itself.

For Kopete and KDE Telepathy, Kopete has been around for much longer, and KDE Telepathy is still under heavy development, and is a recent development. It is not known if KDE Telepathy will replace Kopete at this time, but it has a while to go yet before it has sufficient features to do so.

Dragon Player is part of KDE Multimedia, Kaffeine is a Extragear application.

Since early days KDE has been a community in which people are free to offer their skills; there is no 'top-down' direction of programmers - so different groups of programmers may work on similar applications but each is aimed at a slightly different use-case/user group. This means you are not stuck with one application which does not quite do what you want.

yes,but wouldn't that be at the expense of the applications quality ?
