Jargon that should be explained

Fri Mar 02, 2012 6:55 pm
We have just begun to assemble a Jargon File over at UserBase and we would love your input: Which terms that are used in the user interfaces, in documentation, in the forums or on other KDE pages might be puzzeling to new KDE users (or perhaps even to experienced ones)?

Any suggestions will be greately appreciated.

(Also feel free to add a brief and lucid explanation if you feel like it :) )

Link to the page? :)

*ko = *.kde.org, e.g. fko = forum.kde.org, bko = bugs.kde.org (as mentioned) etc.
Konvi = Konversation
Nepomuk
Akonadi
Strigi
The difference between KDE, KDE SC, KDE Software, Plasma Workspaces, Plasma Desktop etc.
Planet = planetkde.org
Dot = dot.kde.org (or news.kde.org)

More technical:
KPart
KIO slave

Thanks for the suggestions - and keep 'em comming :)

The page is still experimental. I expect it to go live soon, but if you can't wait, you can get a sneak preview here: http://userbase.kde.org/User:Claus_chr/Jargon

Oh, and by the way: comments, corrections and criticism is most welcome.

The Jargon file is now live! Get it while it's fresh here: http://userbase.kde.org/Jargon_File!

As you'll see, it is by no means complete. Suggestions and corrections are still much appreciated.

good addition to userbase

typo bko = bugs.kde.ord in term = xko

could you have page open sorted by term, opens totally unsorted

definitions:
virtual terminal = command line console interface, usually Alt+Ctrl+F[1->6]
widget = a self contained mini application that resides on (maybe integrate into) the desktop and

additions:
cli = command line interface
plasmoid = a native plasma widget
applet = widget
ghns = see Get Hot New Stuff
kdesu = console command use to start a gui application as a different user (usually root) that runs in the existing desktop
kdesudo = see kdesu ??
virtual console = see virtual terminal

It is not possible in mediawiki to sort a table on a certain row per default without clicking the appropriate row before.

Should we add some of these to the glossary in the KDE Help Center?
Some already are but I think it could be good for new (offline) users.

I think fko and bko should be their own term as people will look in the term column not in explanation

is it possible to add a search field ?
