In k3b, I can not click "Play Track" to hear a song. I tried to google the problem, and found a bug report that the function was not merged in phonon yet. That was almost a year and a half ago, so surely it was merged by now. I even tried the VLC back end, but it made no difference. Tried a few other fixes like installing restriced-extras, and k3b extra codecs. I have heard it work in OpenSuse, so why not Kubuntu?

Is this with a Audio CD or a data disc? Also, is this before or after writing?

If you try to play the source files normally (using Dragon Player, Juk or Amarok for instance) do those files play?

Yes, they play in Amarok. Have not tried other media players.

I tested the playback of audio in K3b and found that it not only did not use Phonon, but the system it was using totally bypassed Pulseaudio.
Please file a bug report against K3b, as it should be using Phonon for this functionality (and if it is using Phonon, then it is doing it extremely wrongly).

I will try to remember to do this tomorrow when I have time(and not on my droid phone), but if you can drop me a reminder, or file the bug report, I would appreciate it as I am very forgetful. Are you able to establish if there is a backend that works? As I said, vlc backend does not work either. For what it is worth, I think this is a distro based bug as I have been told it works in gentoo.

Playback of a MP3 file did work on my system - but it came through the internal system speaker instead of my Bluetooth headset - and neither K3b nor anything else showed up in my Pulseaudio enabled KMix (which even Flash does).
Unfortunately it is not likely to be backend related - because it does not use Phonon and therefore cannot be affected by Phonon backends. I've determined that it uses QtMultimedia - which uses GStreamer on Linux I believe. Therefore - if you install the appropriate GStreamer plugins then you should be sorted.

I tried installing every single gstreamer package, both v 0.10 and v 1.0, and the option is still greyed out. If you filed a bug report can you link to it so I can subscribe? If not no worries, I will do it in the AM. I only got on the computer for a moment to test.

I haven't filed any bug report as of yet. Just one question - have you tried clicking on any of the tracks prior to pressing play?

Well, the question in itself is kind of contradictory since you have to right click to bring up the menu with play track in it, so I assume you mean left click? Yes, I did. Both with an MP3 and a FLAC file.

Okay - this is quite unusual then. In this case, filing a bug against K3b is the correct course of action (it should be using Phonon - if it was this issue would not exist).
