the K3b roadmap states disk spanning for data projects is projected for 2.1 (which might not handle files larger then media) - so I'm gonna guess no and I don't see and options for any kind of spanning

when you say "image" what type of file? have you considered the command split for the splitting the file into burnable size pieces

have you considered using partition backup sw? like ping or partimage (no ext3 or brtfs) they seem to allow spanning

also large external drives are pretty cheap these days and if you have usb3 (ports and drive) things would be quite fast

Yeah seriously, I'd recommend buying a like 1TB external hard drive for backup purposes instead of burning to disks. It's really cheap and much less of a hassle. I'd also guess it's less likely to lose your data that way... since self-burned optical disks aren't exactly the most reliable means of storing data.

If you really need to use optical disks, you can as mentioned use the "split" command to split large binary files into multiple parts. For more info, you'd best read "man split", it's all detailed there. You could of course also use dd to do the splitting by hand.

Option I'm trying is to user RAR's splitting function to creat files smaller than 2.1 Gb so I can burn them on 4.4Gb. drives...

K3b can't split RAR files as it has no understanding of archive files. I suggest you use an application such as Ark to create your split archives.
