cdrecord error 254

Thu Dec 15, 2011 3:52 am
I updated to 12.1 and my k3b that worked perfectly in 11.3 is broken.

The initial turnon needs to have system permissions changed to gain access to drives. (This was never the case on any previous installation.)
When I get the drives happy and the program finding all its external programs (messed up permissions, had to uninstall and reinstall everything) I get the cdrecord error.

debugging output (with filenames deleted and username changed):

The DVDs I'm using are from the same batch that I wrote more than a dozen from under 11.3. I have successfully used k3b since, I think, 10.1 and have never seen this problem before. Googling, I see that it seems to have been a frequent issue in some earlier releases, but hasn't showed up recently.

My presumption is that I have failed to configure something properly, but I can't find any leads that would point me to how to configure it right.

Call "cdrecord -version" and check the output. If you see something like:

Cdrecord-ProDVD-ProBD-Clone 2.01.01a74 (i386-pc-linux) Copyright (C) 1995-2010 Jörg Schilling

If you are running the original software, also check the other programs to have the same version number in order to be 100% sure. If you see version numbers below 2.01.01a09 (including 2.01), you are running outdated software that needs an update if you are running Linux-2.6.8.1 or newer.

Starting with 2.01.01a32, all original programs contain the year (2007 or later) and Jörg Schilling in the first line of the -version output. As an Example, "mkisofs -version" outputs:

mkisofs 2.01.01a74 (i386-pc-linux) Copyright (C) 1993-1997 Eric Youngdale (C) 1997-2010 Jörg Schilling

If you are not running the original software, get recent original software from the "Download recent" or from the "Download latest" location. Unpack, compile by running "make" and install. Make sure that all programs that send (SCSI) commands to CD/DVD/Blu-Ray drives are installed to be suid root.

If you are running cdrtools frontends like k3b and others and do not like to replace these programs with original versions, you should remove files like /usr/bin/wodim, /usr/bin/genisoimage, /usr/bin/icedax, /usr/bin/readom and replace them by links to the original software. Note that k3b prefers the original over the fork because of the bug in the fork.
