Recent Files/Folders

Thu Jun 13, 2013 12:29 pm
Hello,
this is a follow up of topic in the dolphins forum, which is about the lack of basic functionality in Nepomuk.
Such as:
1. Recent files/folders
Unfortunately folders aren't tracked at all in Nepomuk - which is really bad and uncomfortable. For instance in the file open dialog, when you want to save a file to a recent folder.

2. Recent files/folders
Nepomuk doesn't offer this at all, instead the history is locked to concrete dates. This is'nt useful at all for the normal workflow (only useful for the Journal in GNOME or similar). Why?
With "today" you have to populate this list from start every day again and again, this can also happen during your worktime (when you work past midnight). "Yesterday" is basically the same and doesn't help you at all when it is Monday and you want to continue your work from last week (or just any day before yesterday).

So in short, what is needed here is a relative approach, such as
20 (or user defined) last used (ie. recent) documets and folders.
7 (or user defined) days of last used documets and folders.

IMHO this is a common basic functionality among other OS's / DE's.

So what do the Nepomuk ppl. say to this? Is this already targeted?
TIA

As a workaround for now, you can use the recentdocuments:/ KIO to show recent files and folders. There's a KIO that combines KRecentdocument and Nepomuk Timeline here: http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/ki ... ent=153315

I agree that it would be nice to have this easily accessible by default.

Wow, this is awesome!
Very strange tho that even the Nepomuk developers, aren't aware of this.... (I had some talks with them on BKO).

I'm afraid this workaround won't hold for long. KDE SC 4.13 is already in the queue and with it Nepomuk will be replaced by baloo, thus very likely braking this app.(?)

Yeah, lets hope that after that Nepomuk rework, there is some effort spent on this...

If this KRecentDocument uses the timeline:/ io-slave, nothing will change (because the change is transparent), if it instead uses the Nepomuk API, there may be sime issues.
