Baloo on a small SSD

Thu Jan 28, 2016 2:23 pm
Hi. My laptop has a small 128 GB SSD running Linux Mint 17.1 KDE and is
currently connected to 4 external drives (total: 4 TB). Currently Baloo is using
over 20 GB of my drive. I want to connect 12 TB more but Baloo
would then be using 80 GB! That would kill my system. I read something in the
Community Wiki about configuring Baloo to index only file names (which
should be an option as it used to be) which is all I need. (I never search
for content). If I make this change, Baloo should only use a few 100 MBs at
the most. Will it shrink down to this size automatically or do I have to do
something else? Thank you.

https://community.kde.org/Baloo/Configu ... iles_Names
This page documents all of the values that can be used to configure Baloo File Indexing. The config file is generally present in ~/.kde4/share/apps/config/baloofilerc in KDE 4, and ~/.config/baloofilerc in KDE 5.

Only index Files Names

[General]
only basic indexing=true
This will trigger Baloo to only index the filename.

Hi. I know about making the configuration change in /baloofilerc. My question was "If I make this change, ...... Will it shrink down to this size automatically or do I have to do something else?" (to free up the 20 GBs Baloo is currently using) Thx.

that I do not know for a fact but would assume it would be the case

per vHanda the dev viewtopic.php?f=154&t=124867#p329193
If you want to clear up the file part. You can run `balooctl disable`. It will delete the entire file index. You can enable it again after that. `balooctl enable`

if its in a hidden folder then a search would not find if the folder wasn't indexed

look in either ~/.config or ~/.kde/share/config

Okay, I found it and made the change. Next, I ran balooctl disable` and it freed up the space on my drive, then I ran `balooctl enable` and received the following message: QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave. Is this something I should be worried about? Thank you for all of you assistance

it appears harmless but difficult to resolve from what I've read, there's a bug report if you're interested https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=297020

I glanced through the bug report. I closed and restarted Konsole but didn't get the message again as others reported. Maybe I'm ok. Thanks again for your assistance. I switched from Windows to Linux Mint KDE (LM13?) about three years ago because of the great support I knew that would be available. The Linux community has never let me down. Thank again!
