desktop search tool

Sun Mar 14, 2010 3:14 pm
in kde3 i used to use the beagle search desktop that was very efficace and i could very easy find the results i wanted. i remember i used it to find very quickly a phone number of a contact.
Now we have nepomuk. sorry but i try to use it many times but i did nt understund how it worls. i searched sometimes for more imformations about it but finaly i think that it is nt for me . may be i dont have the skill but some times developers have to do tools for the less power users.
is there anyone that have the same point of view ?

I think if you play around with krunner (Alt + F2) and type in a contact's name, it should return a list that will open your addressbook to that person when you click it. If you are using Dolphin then you can type in nepomuksearch:/name/ and it will return a list of files matching the search term. As you mouse over each icon all the semantic info for that file will be previewed in the right side pain. You can also type in timeline:/ and it will show a series of folders containg files that have been opened, recieved, etc. for a month, a week, a day etc. The Mandriva wiki has some good stuff about nepomuk. Just search the mandriva site. The main thing is that the kde apps are using nepomuk in some cases and by creating tasks (install nepomuk-tools) with tasktop and by creating tags in apps like digikam all the info on your computer is becoming available to you. But for simple searching, krunner should do the trick.

To be able to search your files, Strigi needs to be enabled in System Settings > Advanced > Desktop Search.

You need to be running KDE 4.4, and using KAddressbook with Akonadi in order to be able to search your contacts in the most effective manner.

yes they was running. Akonadi starts only when i start kontacs . It means that the researchs does nt work correctly when kontact is not running ?

i searched eg a file in krunner, i have not resaults, the same research had resaults in kde 4.3

i will try beagle to see if it works with kde4 too, as i was very satisfy in kde 3.5

For files to be indexed, Strigi needs to be enabled ( System Settings > Advanced > Desktop Search. Make sure to exclude the appropriate directories beforehand )

The contents of Akonadi should be indexed by default in Nepomuk and be available from KRunner without issue.
