How to use Strigi and/or Nepomuk?

Sat Jul 31, 2010 10:53 am
Hi all,

Sorry for the very basic question I put. I haven't yet found any document that explains how to search what has been indexed by Strigi/Nepomuk either from the command line or Dolphin/Konqueror.

Can someone point me to a web tutorial or at least explain some of the most important syntax I need to know in order to use that facility, please?

The only resource I found says that I have to type the following command:
"strigicmd query -t clucene -d ~/.strigi/clucene 'name=XXX' (the XXX stands for the text I want to search)". The problem is that it always produces more than 50MB of text, with peaks of 200MB, whatever word I put after "name=".

Thanks in advance to everyone who will reply.

You really need 4.5 (due out in a few days) to get good search facilities in Dolphin. In 4.5 there is a prominent Search bar, and as soon as you start to add a search term you get additional criteria options appearing just below the search bar.

At this stage no-one has written about it on UserBase, but it's a wiki, so when you've tried it, maybe you could write it up for someone else?

1) Do you mean that strigi and/or nepomuk don't work in KDE-4.4.5 at all?

2) What's the use of "strigicmd" at now?

Thanks,

Strigi and Nepomuk do work in versions prior to KDE 4.5, they simply work better, and are more user accessible, in 4.5.

So, is none of you willing to explain either how to use strigi/nepomuk or point me to some document? Please?

In KDE 4.5, KRunner and Dolphin are equipped with the ability to search your files ( if indexed with Strigi ), tags and ratings. In the case of KRunner, ensure that the Nepomuk runner is enabled, and anything you type in will trigger a search.

For Dolphin, simply use it's integrated search to find files, in a more precise manner. You can also use Dolphin to tag and rate your files. Other KDE applications have capabilities like this as well. ( For instance, KAddressBook uses Nepomuk to search your contacts )

I have KDE 4.4.5 in my Gentoo box. I think that tags and ratings are not enabled because I can't find any means to work with them in Dolphin.
In the case of KRunner, ensure that the Nepomuk runner is enabled, and anything you type in will trigger a search.
KRunner (Alt+F2) is working properly I think, thank you.
For Dolphin, simply use it's integrated search to find files, in a more precise manner. You can also use Dolphin to tag and rate your files.
As I wrote above I can't find any way to manage tags and ratings either in Dolphin or Konqueror. Do I have to enable them some way?

Thank you for your kind help.

If you have the Information Panel enabled in Dolphin, then "Tags" and "Ratings" should be visible in it. You can use these areas to alter this information. If Nepomuk is unavailable, they may be hidden.
