I've been trying to turn off the semantic desktop features, but I still get nagged by a notification complaining that it's off.

So what I did is:

1. Disable Semantic Desktop
a: System Settings -> Desktop Search -> Basic Settings, unticked Nepomuk and Strigi
b: System Settings -> Desktop Search -> Desktop Query, unticked "Index files on removable media" and unticked every folder under "Customise index folders..."
c: System Settings -> Desktop Search -> Backup, set "Backup frequency" to Disable

2. Disable Notifications:
a: System Settings -> Application and System Notifications -> Manage Notifications, unticked all the "Show me a message in a popup" under "Desktop Search" and Semantic Desktop"

The popups I get (always three at a time) are:
Code: Select all
Nepomuk Indexing Disabled
Nepomuk Indexing Agents Have Been Disabled
The Nepomuk service is not available or fully operational and attempts to rectify this have failed. Theref...

The following problems were detected:

- Nepomuk not running.

Additional help can be found here:

I'm guessing that it's Akonadi, but I don't want to turn that off of course.
Anyone know what I'm missing. Thanks

PS: This is a copy of a post of mine at the Arch forums, where someone suggested to ask the Arch package maintainer for help. So, before I go out and bother a developer with my little niggles, I thought I'd try it over here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

AFAIK, Akonadi requires Nepomuk. Not file indexing, but Nepomuk itself.
You can have Nepomuk enabled without enabling file indexing.

The above poster is correct. Akonadi uses Nepomuk for searching information stored in it. The file indexer (Strigi) is not required.

Thank you both very much for the clarification. Re-enabled Nepomuk and left Strigi out in the cold (the poor thing). No messages so far.

I'm still a bit worried about system performance with Nepomuk (sitting on a laptop with rubbish battery :D ), so I'll keep an eye on that.
