photoshop plugin support (.8bf)

Fri May 01, 2015 9:04 am
hi,

i would really love to switch to krita, but i especially need one .8bf plugin

as i found out gimp and paint.net can use it, (but gimp can only load 32 bit .8bf and paint.net doesnt open .exr) and i guess i am not the only one who uses plugins so is it on your roadmap to implement .8bf support?

anyway keep up your awesome work and thank you

best regards
Reinhard

What is .8bf? I'm not sure I've encountered that extension before.

...

Ah wait, those are photoshop plugins. No -- we're probably not going to support those. However, if you tell us what your essential plugin does, we might be able to roll a plugin for Krita that has comparable functionality.

The reason is that nobody has implemented that. Appart from that I don't think there is any other reason.

I think the developertime is better invested in more and better Krita features.

If they were to implement such a compatibility wrapper,
- it would only benefit those who are willing to install proprietary plugins
- it would for sure be complex and deeply tied into krita architecture, making the latter harder to evolve
- the work would be wasted when Addobe goes down or doesn't support the same plugin interface any more

Making Krita itself more awesome in contrast
- is good for all of it's users
- can be done without complex and fragile emulation layers
- is independent of Addobes fate or decisions

Disclaimer: This is only my personal view and i am not a krita developer, but often in software development as in many other fields
the real art is in knowing what not to do.

Yes, I have to agree with Torpak: see http://www.valdyas.org/fading/index.cgi ... ibbon.html for my thoughts on trying to be all things to all people by copying features from other applications. There's also the pesky question of licensing: can we load proprietary code into Krita? Gimp runs plugins in a separate process, but even that is rather iffy. And most 8bf plugins that I've found are really for image manipulation, which is not our true focus.

ok, i totally understand your points after reading the article
i have to admint i have no clue about coding btw, it was just an idea that came in my mind and sometimes especially when its about software i am like a little child with big eyes in front of christmas tree - and get ideas in mind like this an that would also be cool...
and for sure first of all i thought about my needs (just was sure other might like the idea too) and i'd like to have an ps alternative...

thanks again for taking your time and explaining
