plasma (desktop and panels) are saved in ~/.kde[4]/share/config/plasma*rc

going from 4.7.x -> 4.8.x should be ok as it's basically an upgrade, never did the reverse and the issues would be things like changes/enhancemets in 4.8 not available in 4.7 but you won't know till you try. UPDATE for it all to work properly you'd need to have the same widgets and taskbars in all machines

reverting a desktop to default is
Code: Select all
kquitapp plasma-desktop
 sleep 20s
 mkdir -p $HOME/plasma-config/
 mv $(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/config/plasma-desktop* $HOME/plasma-config/
plasma-desktop &

activities, I never played with, are found (as best as I can tell) in:
~/.kde[4]/share/apps/plasma-desktop/activities/
~/.kde[4]/share/config/activitymanagerrc

if it all works or not post your experiences for others

In this case, copying the three plasma configuration files, as well as any Activities files should move the applet layout over.
If you don't mind, copying the entire ~/.kde4/share/ folder should copy over all KDE applications data and preferences.

KDE should upgrade the configuration on your first login. If you want to make a backup, simply make a copy of ~/.kde*, ~/.config and ~/.local before upgrading.
