Dolphin smooth files moving

Thu Jul 19, 2012 1:02 pm
I have a Dolphin's window opened with bunch of files. Now I take some file, lets say, from a desktop plasmoid, and drag it into the Dolphin's window, moving or copying it. The rest of the files in Dolphin's window have to make place for the new one - they have to move (because of sorting). This movement is smooth, animated, and helps me see what have been moved and where. Unfortunately it works only under root account and I have no clue how to enable it for my user. Any ideas?

If you create a new user, does it occur there as well?

Jupp, it works. Let me show what I'm talking about:
(the second Dolphin windows supports the animation)

Under your original user, does removing the Dolphin configuration file "dolphinrc" help fix this?

That was the first thing I did to solve this problem. It doesn't help. I guess this could be related somehow with plasma effects but I have reverted them to defaults as well.

Which application style do you use? Oxygen?

I use Plastik, but it didn't work with oxygen as well.

Can I suggest you try fully checking (not partial) "Improved Window Management" in Desktop Effects to see if this makes a difference.

I have it "partially" checked. When I click on the checkbox and make it "fully" checked, the Apply button remains grayed-out. I can uncheck and check it again, then the button is active. But I have returned it to defaults already when I tried to solve this by myself and also played with this checkbox.

Now that was a fast reply!

I'm not entirely certain this is the setting you are looking for, and it is odd that it is greyed out for you. A while back though I think I had the same issue as you and think it was this setting that fixed it. Maybe someone else here will be able to advise you further, but it sounds like we are on the right track.

Good luck.

I have applied full Improved Window Management and now I see a window fade when a dialog window in Dolphin appears (so those settings worked properly), but still no animation when moving folders.
pagoda thanks for replying so fast ;]

In System Settings > Application Appearance > Style > Fine Tuning, try increasing the level of graphical effects in use to see if that has any impact.

Darn, man, since I have been translating KDE docs I wondered if this setting does anything at all. It seems it does. Thanks!

Is there any description for those options? They seem to work same way except of low resolution and low CPU usage (which disables all extra animations).

Good point mkkot. I had no idea what these particular settings were for either.
