Hi
I changed my main OS from Kubuntu 12.04 64bit to Linux Mint 16 KDE 64bit a couple of weeks ago. It seemed work well but I noticed the window menu of Firefox doesn't work. When I click it, it flashes momentary, but no drop down menu appears. It's the same with short cut keys. e.g. Alt+F, Alt+E, etc. So I restarted Firefox, and its window menu functions came back. But after a long while, again the window menu became not to work. First I thought it's a matter of Firefox. So I removed and reinstalled Firefox, turned off and on add-ons one by one, and almost determined multi-tab add-ons were the causes. But then, I noticed the window menu of Thunderbird became not to work either! So I determined the problem is caused by KDE. I suspect this problem is caused by gtk2-engines. Because I don't use default gtk2-engines-oxygen, as it doesn't work well with Eclipse. I use gtk2-engines-nodoka instead. I have already struggled with this problem for a week and searched into Google, but cannot find any solutions yet. So I have decided to seek help. Is there anybody who has the same experience or knows a solution? Thanks in advance.

Thank you for your quick reply.
I've already tried. But qtcurve also crashes Eclipse which I really need, so I can't use this. |

if you disable compositing (alt+shift+f12) does it help ?

I will try. But it takes time to confirm. The phenomenon is reproduced several minutes or a couple of hours after restarting Firefox. I guess it depends on number of operations or some specific operation causes this problem.
I will try it too. I didn't know such a thing is possible. So it's very useful. Thank you for your advices. But anyway need time. |

nb. that firefox and thunderbird are (likely) the only two XUL applications on your desktop - you can expect them to share random issues.
If it's limited to them, the error will likely be there. Or is it related to compositing? Toggle on/off with Shift+Alt+F12. If it is, try disabling HW acceleration in FF/TB ("about:config", filter for "accel") |

The problem is solved.
The phenomenon was caused by GTK2 theme Nodoka as I suspected. Before testing your suggestions, I wanted to know if the problem was really caused by Nodoka. I set the GTK2 theme back to oxygen-gkt. Then I had operated for a few hours, but nothing special had happened. And I also recalled I had not noticed the problem a first few days after I had installed Linux Mint 16 KDE. So I was almost convinced that phenomenon was caused by Nodoka. But I should have continued testing without changing circumstance, since I was not 100% sure. So I decided to try the newest version of Eclipse. If it works well with oxygen-gtk, all my problems will be over. I downloaded Eclipse 4.3 Kepler from download site, installed and tested. It didn't seem oxygen-gtk crashed Kepler. I have tested for another few hours, and now my trouble is over. The problem of window menu was caused by Nodoka. Eclipse 4.3 Kepler isn't crashed by oxygen-gkt which does crash Eclipse 3.8 Indigo. Thank you everybody. |
