Kickoff Application Launcher.

Fri Jan 24, 2014 9:59 am
Not a big issue but annoying.

As I can resize the kickoff menu panel by grabbing the upper right corner and drag to width and length to my perference.
But it does not stick or stay between reboots.

So what's the point of having resizing if it won't stay between re-boots?
Or am I doing something wrong?

Any help on the issue is appreciated.

try editing ~/.kde/share/config/krunnerrc, specifically the

[Interface]
Size=550,500

section...

Seems a bug?
Exiting "kquitapp plasma-desktop" does store the size (here), so maybe it's a crash-on-exit?

Another thing which can verify if this is a crash on exit or configuration file problem is to try to alter other applets, or add them. If these changes are also reverted, then you are experiencing a crash on exit or have configuration file corruption.

Not sure I understand about crashing? As nothing is crashing.
All my plasmoids work normal and no issues.

Except I'm able to manually re-size the pop out menu to something smaller dragging the top right corner.
Then noticing after re-boot it's back to the larger size pop out panel.

Thanks for the info. But not seeing a confirmation this is a known bug?
As what's the point to be able to re-size panel. But then having to go in and edit a .kde file somewhere?

Again not really a issue just a tiny small annoyance and a "I wonder why?" thought.

The suspicion is that for some reason plasma-desktop fails to store the size of the window when it quits, this could be due to a "crash-on-exit" (ie. it crashes when and because you exit) or because it's forcefully terminated on logout (because it fails to quit gracefully)

Open a "konsole" window, there type
Code: Select all
kquitapp plasma-desktop

your desktop is now gone!, but windows can still be activated and used - see whether there's a crash dialog
next run
Code: Select all
 plasma-desktop

and check whether the geometry is restored as expected.

Please note that in many cases, crash-on-exit's can be completely invisible as you expect the desktop to disappear on logout.
The only symptom of a crash-on-exit is the failure of Plasma Desktop to save it's settings - such as the size of Kickoff in your case.

Hmmm strange then as anything else I do resize or reposition panels.
Rearrange plasmoids to change plasmoid settings All retain without issue.

In any instance, can you try the kquitapp and plasma-desktop relaunch as mentioned above?
Also - which version of KDE are you using?
