Running Wireshark GUI in KDE

Sun Aug 03, 2014 3:17 pm
from an old post in the forums https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=85201

Yeah, this old post wasn't specific about the KDE plasma workspace
as I was interested in at least the command line interface for wireshark.
But now currently, I do have a more wireshark in KDE related question . . .

Centos 7 does such a great rendering of the KDE plasma workspace,
and in Centos 7 KDE I can yum install wireshark for a CLI :
Code: Select all
Package wireshark.x86_64 0:1.10.3-10.el7 will be installed

These instructions for a wireshark GUI are for gnome
http://ask.wireshark.org/questions/31925/how-to-install-wireshark-on-centos

My installed Centos 7 KDE will say that
Code: Select all
Package wireshark-gnome.x86_64 0:1.10.3-10.el7 will be installed

but a google search for this sort of thing gets (old) lines like :
"Some gtk/gnome apps appear to be causing random freezes when I run them under kde/kdm.
Evolution and Wireshark appear to be the two biggest culprits at the moment."

Wireshark GUI in KDE was found in the forums: https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=118792
but what other packages are needed to go from wireshark CLI to the GUI wireshark in KDE environments ?
(Fedora or any other distro)

Thanks.

There's nothing such as a "gnome" or "KDE" wireshark GUI.

Wireshark as of now still uses gtk2, they're porting to Qt4/5 but that's not end-user ready yet.
Looking up the fedora database: despite being called "gnome", it's rather "gnome2" and actually just the gtk2 GUI - the only one available atm.

Unspecific claims of "freezes" (of what? wireshark? kwin? X11?) on a specific desktop environment (or even display manager, LOL) are rather FUD.
Ultimately all applications run on X11 and their toolkit. A "freeze" could point a grabbed mouse, keyboard or server. Or a hung GPU. Or the source of that quote had his system underpowered.
I've not seen wireshark hanging under KDE (or actually ever)

tl;dr
install that package to get a wireshark GUI
