Unpolished look 'n feel

Thu Jun 25, 2015 7:09 pm
I've installed an OpenSuse/Tumbleweed ISO that I downloaded 2015/06/22; I believe these are using >= QT5.3. I have some applications open, such as Konsole, Firefox, etc. and there are icons for them in the task bar (panel at the bottom). I increase the height of the taskbar. Now the icons in the taskbar do not scale well, and are ugly. So they are not SVG, but are being scaled up from a smaller image file. This was not a problem in KDE 4 or for that matter any windowing environment I've used in the past many years.

Not only that, but when I hide the bottom panel, and then hover close to the bottom of the screen, there is an ugly blue bar that pops up which is about 90% of the width of the screen.

This is also the case in Kubuntu 15.04, so it seems to be an upstream issue.

To turn off the "ugly blue bar", run "kcmshell5 kwineffects" and disable the screen edge effect.
Not sure whether the icon scaling is a bug in the taskbar, but if it *only* affects "some" windows, it's likely rather because the window doesn't provide bigger variants (check "xprop" on the window)

Thanks, I was able to turn off the blue bar from the Desktop Effects using your hint of 'screen edge effect'. I was calling it ugly not because I don't like the concept, but because the bar was too thick, had fuzzy edges including fuzzy semi-circular ends. It also seemed to cause a lag in un-hiding the task bar, relative to the edges of the screen bottom where it was not present.

It isn't clear why it's called 'screen edge effect' since it only popped up at the bottom edge of the screen, not the other edges.

As for the icons, they are fuzzy for every application - the usual KDE ones such as Konsole, Dolphin, Amarok, Configure Desktop; and also others such as VLC. Fonts in the task bar, as well as images and fonts in the applications are razor sharp.

Did we regress from SVG icons to bitmaps?

Thanks again!

It's supposed to hint "something will happen if you move the mouse here"

Afair oxygen icons were never svg (on installation)

I assume the issue will be something like
- taskbar demands icon on 40px
- QIcon returns 32px
- taskbar blows it up
instead of
- demanding a 48px icon
- getting that
- scaling it down to 40px

Well, that's at least not a technical bug ;-)
Of course blue on "red" is a matter of its own

Wild guess: did you try restarting plasmashell after changing the size?

Yes, this is after some reboots.

the breeze icons are only used in SVG, but when there is no breeze icon available the APP icons were used and they would be PNG files.
