How to change icons in control-bar

Thu Oct 15, 2015 9:59 am
In my controlbar there are icons for applications, for file and for directories. The icons I use for files are ok. The icons for directories are boring and I cannot differ one from another because they all are the same. I did not find a way of using special icons. Is there a way?

Surely, I would like to post a photo, but I don't find any way to upload a file. There is no button like "search a file on local device" or something like that. Excuse me please, on this forum I'm a newbie.

If you like upload it to an image hosting service like http://imgur.com/ and paste the link. To take a screen grab just use ksnapshot. The reason I ask is I am unsure control bar you are looking at.

Ah that's perfect, I still am having trouble figuring out what is out of place (sorry) but I think what you are calling the control bar is a panel for future reference.

Anyway if I am correct I am looking at this part of your screen? http://imgur.com/P4dFR2e

When you pin a file or folder to the panel it creates a icon widget or folder widget respectively.

You can change the icon for a folder view by doing this
    1. click on the folder icon
    2. when the list drops down right click
    3. select folder view settings
    4. click on icon
    5. selection an icon and save

The icons for files As far as I can tell its static and can not be changed on an individual bases easily. You may want to make a feature request at https://bugs.kde.org/

However this can be done manually and is a bit cumbersome, There is a file located at
Code: Select all
.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc

that contains all the settings for your plasma desktop. You would find an entry such as this.

Code: Select all
[Containments][26][Applets][66][Configuration][General]
applicationName=pizza receipts
genericName=pizza receipts
iconName=application-pdf
url=file:///home/terminus/pizza receipts.pdf

If you change the value of iconName to another icon stored in /usr/share/icons/YOURTHEME in theory it should work, I was able to change a pdf Icon to the icon of chromium. However I had to restart plasmashell

Hope I was of some help I figured this all out just for you :), I am still kinda new to KDE my self been using it for a few months and decided the best way to learn the ins and outs was to help others.

Hello Terminus, we are talking about the same subject: it is the panel. I often don't know the english expressions for special parts ... I have been looking for ".config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc" but this file does not exist on my computer, either in /home/user/ not in /root/.
A right click on an icon after I did a left click only closes the list.
I am sorry, because you have many ideas to solve the problem, and I always write "does not work with my machine"!

Some minutes later: I found the file. Will have a look an sunday or monday morning.

Hello, I inserted "iconName=audio-x-generic" into that file, but it does not help.
