Removing kde-wallpapers-default

Sun Nov 15, 2015 12:11 am
Does anyone know if I can remove these without consequences? I marked for removal and it said that it would affect other packages, and more packages would be installed. I don't have a clue what this might do to my system. I don't like the Default Wallpapers so they are just in the way.

Thanks pcpunk

Distro package management problem - in general no wallpaper is required, but if the package is marked as hard dependency for something else, "something else" will be removed by the package manager as well. But again: that dependeny management is up to the distro you use.

Is that a yes or a no?

It did not say it would remove anything, it said it was going to install more packages?

I'm using Linux Mint KDE-17.1

I would I know if it is "marked as hard dependency"? I didn't see anything like that mentioned.

Thanks!

It is, as clearly stated: "depends on your distro".
The .dsc describes it as optional and *removing* a package should never *add* other packages anyway.
You probably attempt a broader update with your GUI package manager.

Try "dpkg -r kde-wallpapers-default"

What is the ".dsc"? Sorry, don't understand linux file system yet. I will read it if you tell me how to get to it.

Yes, I found it odd that it would say *Add* packages when removing it.

Wonder it I could just delete the folders I don't want in File Manager?

Thanks! all those extra wallpapers take up to much space and time to load.

*.dsc are the DeSCription files in debian packages.
You can delete the files, but the package manager will simply re-add them with the next update, the proper way to un/install software is using the package manager.

No idea about space issues, but they do certainly not increase load time (unless opening the wallpaper folder in an image browser, of course)

The .dsc files would Include the Wallpapers also right? and therefore will all be restored upon next update?

Load Time: what I mean by this is the load time for the "Folder Settings". When Right Clicking on Desktop to access the Wallpapers, it takes a bit for them to load, then I have to wade through all of them to find the only ones I use. So while not important (maybe) to you power users, I like to access them without the quite slow scrolling through them all.

Thanks again, I will try to find the proper packages in Package Manager as I have already but will look again.

The .dsc file just describes the package.
The wallpapers would be re-added because they're part of a package that gets upgraded (since its still in the list of installed packages)
(Imagine you'd extract an archive)

What if I remove these, will that be the right course? Hope I am posting this right, will have to look for directions for this site.

I tried the link and it worked, if there is a better way please tell me. I could not just paste the BBC Code as it was to long? I choose "Share Link" at Imgur.com

There is a bug in the Kubuntu Trusty 14.04.3 package that is causing the added installation of packages - Mint is using Kubuntu's KDE packages.

I see no bug report on launchpad for it, but here is what I see when trying to remove the package:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get remove kde-wallpapers-default
[sudo] password for claydoh:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  aptdaemon diffstat gettext hardening-includes intltool-debian
  libapt-pkg-perl libarchive-zip-perl libasprintf-dev libautodie-perl
  libclass-accessor-perl libclone-perl libcroco3 libemail-valid-perl

  libparse-debianchangelog-perl libperlio-gzip-perl libsub-identify-perl
  libsub-name-perl libtext-levenshtein-perl libunistring0 lintian patchutils
  python3-aptdaemon python3-defer t1utils
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
The following extra packages will be installed:
  kde-artwork-active ksplash-theme-active libdeclarative-multimedia
  libnepomukdatamodel0 libqt4-declarative-gestures libqtmultimediakit1

Abort.

I'll assume that this effects the kubuntu-backports ppa packages as well (which is where Mint imported the version it has for 17.1) If the same version you have exhibits the same problem on my system , I'll fire off a report to the ppa's bug tracker

@claydoh , thank you for all your time and helping me to get my KDE all setup the way I like.

I think you are asking me to confirm if I am seeing the same output as you, and yes I am. I will try and post it here.

What about just removing the Packages in Synaptic that I posted a link to Imgur above? which read like this "linuxmint-maya" "linuxmint-nadia" etc.
I guess I should try that. I am just a very timid user, you guys are power users and can fix stuff, I can't. Let's see if I got this Code Post right?

Code: Select all
chris@chris-HP-Compaq-nx7400-EN352UTR-ABA:~ > sudo apt-get remove kde-wallpapers-default

Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.

Yes, as you see we have basically the same thing going on.
I'll report the bug over on Launchpad, but for Mint, you may want to do the same using whatever bug reporting tool that they use, since they import the Kubuntu packages, and don't source them directly - any fix done by Kubuntu may not show up in Mint.

I am just a very timid user, you guys are power users and can fix stuff,

Lol, I am far from a power user; we all started somewhere ;)
You are doing things right. You see something that doesn't look correct and search for info about it.

Something I should note (and missed when looking at it) is that this particular package, kde-wallpapers-default, contains exactly one wallpaper image. Kubuntu itself only ships this single one by default - users have to do the opposite of what you are doing, as they have nothing to scroll through at all.

I will bet that the Mint-specific wallpaper packages are desktop-agnostic, and probably won't cause the same thing that removing KDE's default wallpaper package is doing

Thanks claydoh, think I'll try to remove those silly Backgrounds from mint or where ever they are from, and see if there is any Errors. I am using Timeshift so I guess if I have any issues that will fix things for me. There is just too much in there with the ones I actually use and like.

Hey guys, wanted to report back...that I removed all of the mint-backgrounds except for Rebecca which is the OS I am using, figured there might be something there that the OS is using? All went well enough, and most of the extra/unwanted Backgrounds are gone, with only the Rebecca left, which I can live with. Wow lot's of junk Backgrounds in there.

Thanks pcpunk
