Pretty 'new' to KDE (for using xfce and ignoring KDE for at least ten years) I fiddled around with it and experience some issues since ;) .

Opening some applications (like nvidia-settings) as a user makes them appear without any borders around the buttons and tick boxes or radio buttons disappear (if a screenshot would help I'd need some advice where to save and how to share it). Opening the same apps as root makes same appear 'regularly'. I already tried to reconfigure Window Decorations, tried different themes etc. but nothing worked. I'm sure it's some simple clicks but I can't figure out which ones. So any hint is highly appreciated...

Annoying but definitely not a big thing - so an occasional response would be fine.

Best regards,
slo

Sorry but I don't grok that statement, if you want root apps to appear differently then you must configure root's appearance separately by running systemsettings as root

as for the "other applications appearance":
- can you show what Nvidia settings looks like and what you expect it to look like
- which other apps experience this issue
note: did you try changing Gnome Application Style (GTK) for these ""other applications"?

ok for Nvidia settings Gnome Application Style (GTK) in systemsettings should be set to Breeze (other options may also work)

@google01103:
If I open nvidia-settings as root the application window appears exactly as you posted it. If I open it as ordinary user it looks like described above (no borders around the buttons and drop down menus, no radio buttons and no tick boxes. It looks like this:

while when starting it as root (sudo nvidia-settings) it looks like this:

Image

(what is what I want them to look like) or like this:

Image

I DON'T WANT to make windows look different when opening them as root / user. I just want them to appear regularly (with all the buttons, boxes, borders etc.) when opened by a user. Hope I was able to explain my intentions this time...

not sure your issue as Breeze provides the borders for me and I can't replicate the lack of text as in your pic

things to try:
- rename ~/.config/kwinrc and restart Kwin with "kwin_x11 --replace"
- open root's sytemsettings and replicate to your's
- test as a new user

ps - sometimes it helps to know what you're running, distro & version of Plasma

also you could try removing/renaming all gtk* folders and files in ~/.config

Thank you very much for your suggestions BUT

rename ~/.config/kwinrc and restart Kwin with "kwin_x11 --replace"

crashed everything I had manipulated / configured so far and did not solve the issue at all AND

root's system settings and mine are already the same (I checked that twice). The 'look and feel' of nvidia-settings opened from within a new user account is identically 'malformed'. BTW is this a GTK program and how do I distinguish these from others (Qt-programs?)?

Having said / written that it will hopefully come as no surprise that I did not dare to delete / rename every gtk-related folder in /.configure...

Distro I use is manjaro, plasma version is 5.6.3

do you have issues with other gtk/gnome apps?

try
Code: Select all
nvidia-settings --use-gtk2

you could also try:
try
Code: Select all
nvidia-settings --no-config

OpenSuse Leap 42.1 x64, Plasma 5.x

:) :) 8) 8) :) :) 8-) 8-) :) :)

That did it. (How) Can I make it permanent?

And - btw - is there an 'official' way to say THANK YOU?

which did it?

you could use an alias in your ~/.bashrc file
alias nvidia-settings='nvidia-settings --use-gtk2'

no idea why you're experiencing this

which did it?

Opening nvidia-settings with the argument --use-gtk2 did it.

So if I can get around by adding aliases for every program that misbehaves that'll be fine with me.

Thanks a lot for taking the time!
