where are the configuration files stored for the toolbars

I have two toolbars on my desktop, one at the top, one at the bottom. I use the top toolbar mainly for accessing shortcuts to my most frequently used programs. For example, I have icons for konsole, gedit, and speedcrunch on my top toolbar. What I'm trying to find out is where the configuration files are stored for those shortcuts. On the K menu all of the programs have a .desktop file saved in /usr/share/applications. So if I wanted to change the icon for one of those application launchers I would edit the corresponding .desktop file in the /usr/share/applications folder. However the icons on the top toolbar don't change when the icon is changed in the corresponding .desktop file. So how can I change the icon for one of the application shortcuts on my top toolbar? Is a separate .desktop file saved for each shortcut on the toolbar?

After some additional research into this problem I think it's turning out to be more of a bug than a configuration issue. If you right click on one of the icons and click 'Icon Settings' it clearly points to the same .desktop file. So if I manually edit that .desktop file and then right click on the toolbar icon it displays the correct icon in the properties window. But for some reason the actual toolbar icon isn't updated unless I click OK in the icon's properties window. I'll go ahead and file a bug report for this issue.

A local copy of the *.desktop files can also be made automatically in your ~/.local/share/applications. They override any system wide *.desktop files, with their values. This will generally happen when you use the Menu Editor as a user, who cannot write to those files, so they are copied and edited in the users $HOME.

Thanks for the tip. I checked the .local/share/applications folder and didn't find any .desktop files for the icons on my top panel so I've filed a bug report for this issue.

Just another thought. After changing the files, does running kbuildsycoca ( KDE 3 ) or kbuildsycoca4 ( KDE 4 ) have any effect on the icons?

No luck. I'm currently using KDE 4.1.3 so after running kbuildsycoca4 the following was displayed.

kbuildsycoca4 running...
kbuildsycoca4(18434) kdemain: Reusing existing ksycoca

The icons remained the same on my top panel. Right clicking on them and clicking 'icon settings' displays the correct icon in the properties window, but the panel icon never changes unless I click OK in the properties window.

Is there any way to refresh the plasma panels?

Sorry for the hijack but is there an overview of global KDE config files anywhere on the net? I've been looking unsuccessfully for yonks.
