I need to change the default association for certain file types. For some reason all .htm files are currently opening in a text editor and I need them to open in Firefox. Previously if I wanted to change the default association for a certain file type I would right click on the file and select Open WIth -> Other. Then I would select the new program to open it with and check the box labeled "Remember application association". Unfortunately that box no longer seems to have any effect on my .htm files. So I'm curious if it's possible to change the default association from the terminal. Where are the configuration files stored for the default program associations for each file type? And can they be modified from the terminal or opened in a text editor and modified? Thanks.

I believe you can edit the file ~/.local/share/applications/defaults.list. If the file does not exist then create it adding the following line at the top
You can then add any entries you want, specifying the mimetype= ( application/keyhole=Google-googleearth.desktop for Google Earth for instance )

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately I wasn't able to change the default application for opening text/html files by editing the defaults.list file. However I did find another file in the same folder named mimeapps.list. If I add the following line to that file then all .htm files will successfully open in Firefox.
[Added Associations] text/html=firefox.desktop;gedit.desktop;

Glad to hear you managed to fix that problem. If this is solved could you please add [SOLVED] to the beginning of the thread subject. Thanks in advance.
