black desktop in KDE on primary monitor

Hi,

I have Kubuntu 20.04 LTS version. I have two monitors connected to my PC - primary one via HDMI and secondary via DisplayPort. Both have the same resolution.
After login into KDE I have the 'task panel' and the 'application launcher' on the correct (primary) monitor. But sometimes I dont have any 'desktop wallpaper' - just black screen (when I minize all windows) on the primary monitor. I do have the Application Launcher and the 'main panel' on the primary monitor, but no other widgets that i placed on the desktop (icons, plasmoids, however they all called). I have correct desktop wallpaper on the secondary monitor - but of course, without any widgets since they are placed on the primary one. Also, the notifications popups show on the secondary monitor.
I don't know exact steps to reproduce, because it seems this is happening randomly - sometimes I have the desktop wallpaper and sometimes i don't. In all cases I have wallpaper on secondary monitor and I have the 'main panel' and 'application launcer' visible on the primary one (but not the other widgets, icons and wallpaper) This happens on different activities too - for some I have the desktop layout as Desktop and for other I have it as Folder View.
Any idea what can couse this and/or how to fix it?

Thanks

Just for clarity: do you use the default settings or did you change anything in the Themes?
Also what kind of graphic card do you use?

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

I'm using 'Breeze Dark' theme and default login screen. I also tried installed couple of different login themes (Breeze-Noir-Dark and Sugar Dark) with the same results.
I have AsRock Radeon RX 5500 XT Challenger D 8GB (lshw gives: product: Navi 14 [Radeon RX 5500/5500M / Pro 5500M]) graphics card with amdgpu driver

The problem exists on the one connected by HDMI? Check the cable, those can be really tricky beasts. Try another HDMI cable instead

thanks,

yes, the problem is with HDMI monitor. Maybe I was not clear enough - I can see all the windows on the primary monitor. I just don't see any wallpaper and desktop widgets. I mean, I can normally work with applications, but when i minimizes them all to get access to desktop (like that 'Show Desktop' widget) I only see black screen. Sometimes restart helps, sometimes I need to restart multiple times. It seems like its fifty-fifty chance I get correct behaviour.

Are your background pictures stored on a NAS, webspace or another partition? Could be not mounted on startup - or mounted to late.

no, i'm using just the standard wallpapers that comes with KDE (part of Kubuntu 20.04 at least). And i have also few widgets on the desktop which are missing too

Have a look at the journals output, if there is anything related on failure:
Code: Select all
journalctl -b -xep 0..4
will display all warnings and errors since boot.

Could you also show the output of
Code: Select all
sudo update-pciids  # requires internet
lspci -nn | grep -E 'VGA|Display'

I could not find anything related to your card searching by name.

The card should run with kernel 5.4 and mesa 20.x (which you should have, as ubuntus package search says :) ), but the error log seems to be cut off.

You can redirect the journal-output to a file
Code: Select all
journalctl -b -xep 0..4 > ~/output.journal

Warning: This will overwrite an already existing file with this name!

Also it seems last few days it's happening pretty much all the time. I haven't changed anything, so I'm not sure whether this could be caused by som update or it's just a bad luck

As I do not know, which of the messages are related to your problem, I tried to find some hints on the web, but there only were probably related issues with GDM (GNOME), and another bug related on TeamViewer.
Is your installation a fresh install or an upgrade? Do you use external sources like PPA on your system? There are perhaps kernel options for your graphics card, but I have no experience with AMD-stuff so far… perhaps a full dmesg log will provide better information, if anyone on this board is firm with amdgpu.

SDDM: I cannot track down the sddm-errors and the only "help" I can give is: remove the sddm-cache, so it can be rebuild on startup.
Code: Select all
sudo mkdir -p /var/lib/sddm/backup/qmlcache/
sudo mv /var/lib/sddm/.cache/sddm-greeter/qmlcache/* /var/lib/sddm/backup/qmlcache/

If it does not help or makes things worser, you may undo this action by moving the files back.

Besides the screen problem and about the KVM warning: If you use a virtual machine, like a system installed in qemu, you should activate the virtualization in uefi/bios to use this support. This will fasten up your virtual machines to nearly host speed

Hi,
This is fresh install to a new computer, I'm using some additional sources:
Code: Select all
ppa.launchpad.net/alexlarsson/flatpak/ubuntu
ppa.launchpad.net/openjdk-r/ppa/ubuntu
ppa.launchpad.net/linuxuprising/java/ubuntu
dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/

It's installed on physical hardware, not a VM, but good point, I might enable virtualization in BIOS.
This is my first AMD GPU too, but I thought since AMD is working on the open source driver it should be fine (honestly, I had some issues lately in linux with my old nvidia quadro).

I'll try to move the SDDM cache, maybe that will help
Thank you
