External monitor stopped working

Mon Oct 19, 2020 4:48 pm
After disconnecting an external HDMI monitor without turning off the computer, it stopped working when logging in. The login session prompt displays fine, but once I log in, the KDE logo appears for a second then the display turns off. The desktop extends (I can see it in the workspaces thumbnails) but the monitor stays turned off.

I tried creating another user and it works fine there. So does the original user with XFCE.

I tried replacing `.config/plasmashellrc` and other files, a bit wildly and without really knowing what I was doing, but never got to fix it.

Any ideas on what may be going on and how to fix it?

Cheers.

I managed to make it work manually with

Code: Select all
xrandr --output DP-1 --auto --left-of eDP-1-1

This seems to solve the problem permanently.

Thanks for this. I had the very same problem with KDE neon. The second monitor irregularly would come up and down, and then finally just stopped working. Oddly, it works fine if I switch to wayland (though of course there are the other wayland issues), but using X11, the monitor was just gone. This occurred for me right after my last set up upgrades. The xrandr fix worked great!
