i installed kde 4.2 beta and its awesome. but i want to change some things back to 4.1
i dont want the kickoff menu styled. i want it the plain simple 4.1 style i dont want frames around the system tray or open applications. it was perfect in 4.1 oxygen theme and yet i dont want to actually downgrade plasma to 4.1 (if its plasma and not oxygen) how do i revert those back to 4.1 ? is it enough to extract some files from the 4.1 packages and place them in the correct folders in the system ? is it possible to apply 4.1 kickoff style to the device notifier and other similar stuff too ? |

It's not totally what you want but you can try the elegance desktop theme. Right click on the desktop and select "Appearance settings" and under desktop theme, find "Elegance".

Unfortunately in order to solve the bugs in the system tray implementation so that corruption no longer showed through, the edge had to be added around it.

Which corruption in particular? Even with latest KDE (at least as far as the OpenSuse unstable branch goes...in other words, 4.1.87) I still get some ugly systray artifacts every now and then (not as bad as it used to be though, which is great). Or maybe you mean a different kind of corrupution?

Corruption = artefacts, mashed backgrounds, etc. observable in 4.1. These usually persisted until the icon updated / theme changed / repaint triggered by the app somehow.
I see it in 4.2 some times ( rarely ) however it happens quite a bit less than 4.1

and what about the menu ?
i'd like to copy 4.1 oxygen over to 4.2 |

Well, the 4.1 menu was white. So you can use customized plasma theme and set Aya or any other white theme for the menu.
You can set up the customized theme from KMenu -> System Settings -> Advanced -> Desktop theme details -> Kickoff |

its about the theming and not the color
4.1 was plain unthemed rectangular. 4.2 is themed oxygen |

That was did to make it match with the rest of plasma controls. Aya Kickoff more or less looks unthemed, except for that it has transparency.

I cant seem to find a theme folder. But iirc, the theme is packaged with the 4.1.85 (or above) packages and I'm not sure that you can find them as standalone components.
