Installed Fedora 10 in a VM, screen res is 1680X1050, system settings has all fonts set to 8 point but they appear HUGE, looking more like 16 point in all launched applications.
Setting the fonts to 5 point makes the applications look OK but system dialogues are unreadable, exactly how a 5 point font at this resolution should look. Anyone else come across this 'problem'? |

I have never come across this issue before. Although what is a system dialog? ( Notification? )
Does this affect only KDE applications? Also which version of KDE have you installed?

KDE 4.1 System Dialogue.. ok, a bit of a misnomer on my part.. my bad. All text in the K Menu is as one would expect, Login dialogue looks right, Everything in the panel looks correct, Text in the Cashew looks right, as does everything in the 'Add Widgets' dialogue, and the text in KPackageKit looks OK too. The version of KDE I am running is 4.1.2 shipped with the Fedore 10 Distro before applying any updates. So far as I can see it affects KDE apps, I haven't been running any Gnome applications. A partial list of apps that look wrong (huge fonts) (Fedore 10) KTorrent Konqueror Dolphin Okular Desktop Switcher DNGImageConverter and many many more.

Does this issue occur under other users or only your own? This sounds like a damaged configuration file.

I have installed KDE on a Toshiba Laptop and see the same. The basic screen looks perfect but as soon as I start up an application, I only see huge fonts. |

It sounds to me like X11's font DPI might be too high, but I never had that problem myself, so I'm not sure how to handle that.
