[SOLVED] Kickoff and toolbars icon size

Hi all from this new member.

I've just installed 4.2 and seen what an improvement devs have got since 4.1. Congrats and tons of thanks to all of them, :).

But despite all the love KDE 4.2 has got from me I'd like to ask a couple of questions I'm not sure if I should report as bugs/wishes or what, but I better ask here before:

1. There's any way to change Kickoff icons' size? I mean not the "K" icon which opens it but the icons inside Kickoff.
I have a laptop with a 1280x800 px. screen and Kickoff eats almost half of horizontal screen size and mor than a half of vertical. Vertical size is easily adjustable, but the minimum limit for Kickoff width is still too big. It seems it's determined by the icons' and their underlying text size, since there's a lot of unused space in menus between the end of the descriptive texts and the right border of Kkf, so I son't think menu content has much to do, no? Besides, icons are huge, like designed for visually impaired people.
Is there any way to decrease icon size and to hide their text like in KDE apps, even if that means to mess a bit with some obscure configuration file?

2. This second one I think is a bug.
I can't make apps keep their toolbar icons at 16 px. I have configured 16 px as the default icon size for toolbars in systemsettings, but it doesn't work; whenever I launch an app its toolbar's icons are 22 px big. It seems that the default toolbar icon size option in systemsettings doesn't have any effect. Neither it works choosing icons size via right click on an app's toolbar and choose the small size; icons shrink, yes, but restart the app and icons are again 22 px.
Again, even if the solution involves messing with any weird config file, please tell me.
I think the only deffect of Oxygen theme is the wasted space. Too much "thickness" in many areas, surrounding spaces, borders, bars, etc, but knowing nothing about hacking all I can do is to tweak everything that is supposedly easy for common users.

Thanks.

You can change from the Oxygen theme to a one of the many other themes available through System Settings > Appearence > Style.

With regard to toolbar icon sizes, try setting both "Toolbar" and "Main Toolbar" and seeing if it has any effect. If it does, please still file a bug for the effected applications that they do not save toolbar sizes.

Kickoff should follow the large Desktop size specified in System Settings, otherwise you might want to try the classic Menu ( right click on KDE Icon, "Switch to classic menu option" )

System Settings > Apperence > Icons. Second tab, can't remember its name currently.

Oh nice, I never even knew it was possible to change that. All these years I've been changing the toolbars manually in each and every application separately.

I dont know why, but I never have found this option before! :-O

Now I understand, why some toolbar icons, always returning to its original size back...Puh... :lightbulb:

Thank You! :-)

EDIT: ****. After a restart, the the menubar icons change back to 22px, even if I've set it to 16px.

This problem drives me in the madness! What goes wrong?

I hadn't thought about switching themes; I like Oxygen, but it wastes a lot of space. Anyway maybe it's time to visit kde-look (I obviously refuse to change Oxygen for Motif or CDE, for example, hehe). Thanks for the tip; .

With regard to toolbar icon sizes, try setting both "Toolbar" and "Main Toolbar" and seeing if it has any effect. If it does, please still file a bug for the effected applications that they do not save toolbar sizes.

I tried, in fact the default icon size for both "Toolbar" and "Main Toolbar" is set since yesterday to 32 pixels. No notice; toolbars' icon sizes are 22.

Kickoff should follow the large Desktop size specified in System Settings, otherwise you might want to try the classic Menu ( right click on KDE Icon, "Switch to classic menu option" )

What do you mean with "large Desktop size" in S. Settings? In the "icons" section of System Settings -> tab "Advanced" I have no "large" option for desktop icons nor for any other icons, I only can choose sizes by number of pixels, not by "small", large", etc.
The laptop I mentioned is my mother's (I thought since 4.2 RC1 KDE 4 was ready for everyday use and updated her 3.5 version) and for users like her Kickoff sorts favorite apps, places and recent documents and apps more handy and clearly than classic menu without the need of editing, so I think I'm keeping it despite its desproportionate size; hopefully Kickoff will be improved. Thanks, anyway.

As KFreak confirms in the 6th post it seems it's a bug. I'll report it if nobody points to a solution the next days.

Please do post the bug, after searching for an already existing one. Please state in the bug report whether all KDE applications are affected, or just certain ones.

I've found the "cause" and a temporary workaround till the bug is fixed.
In case anyone is interested, read:
1. Don't set your "Main toolbar" size in System Settings->Icons->tab "Advanced" to 16 pixels; choose any other size, it isn't going to have any effect anyway..., but not 16 px.
2. Go to any KDE app and right click on the toolbar, and then choose the icon size you want.

That's all. Next time you launch the app which toolbar's icon size you have changed icons will keep the size you have set.
Don't ever change "Main Toolbar" icon size in System settings to 16 px or all KDE apps will have their toolbars' icons 22 pixels big again when you launch them.

The fact that System Settings settings don't have any effect besides allowing or disallowing change sizes individually for each app is still a bug that I'll fill whithin these days, but for the moment there's the mentioned workaround.

Bcooksley, should I edit this thread and put some "[Solved... sort of]" tag or something like that?

[EDIT]
My KDE is in Spanish, so perhaps the names in the english version aren't exactly how I've written, but I suppose you can still understand what I mean.

[EDIT 2]
Reproducing waht I had said, in order to fill a bug report, I noticed that I had been too 16 pixels-centric; so, to be more correct I must clarify that the problem is not when choosing 16 pix size for "Main Toolbar" icons in System Settings but to choose any size except the default 22 px size. The icon size you set in S. Settings is the size you WON'T be able to set for your apps toolbar, again, excepting 22 px, which doesn't seem to present any problem. So, set an icon size in S. Settings that you are not going to use for your applications toolbar and it will work, otherwise icons will be always 22 px when you restart the app.

Bug reported.
I'll use "It's solved" thing; although I don't think a workaround is a real solution, but since there's no "Solved... more or less" button, I think it's ok, hehe.

Regards.

Damn, I can't find it! How do I to find the bug I have reported? I don't understand very well this bugs.kde site... :-s

[Edit]
Sorry, but I give up. After 20 minutes trying to look for my report I haven't been able to find it. It seems there's not a track system for users' reported bug, there isn't a way to discriminate bugs for KDE 2, 3 and 4, or I haven't seen it; besides there are dozens of duplicates and similar bugs, it's crazy.

Hi to everyone, sorry to ask about this issue, but i don't understand about the way to change icons. I just want to change the size of the icons inside the K-Menu, at the bottom, like "Favorites", "Applications", etc..., there is a way to do that ?? keeping theme, custom environment icons size, etc... just the icons at the bottom of the K-Menu. I use openSUSE 11.2 KDE 4.3.5.
