Can it be done without disabling the rest of the compositing features? I like the compositing but the panel animation just is not quick enough for my taste (and you can't change the speed any more as in KDE3). Also, the transparency causes ugly artifacts in the systray.

Somewhat related, how do i get rid of the ugly blueness around the active window?

Thanks for any help.

PS: i am using KDE4.2 final in Opensuse 11.1

The blue glow is a part of the Oxygen/Ozone window decoration and can be disabled by either completely disabling KWin's shadow desktop effect or by forcing the "default shadow" in the shadow effect's configuration window.

Which leaves a rather ugly blue rim around the window.
Still, thank you.
Is disabling the panel animation not possible or just very hard?

To which animation are you referring to? There's a couple of window minimization and restore animations in System Settings -> Desktop -> All Effects that you can play around with but to change the actual animations on the panel itself you are required to change the entire Plasma theme.

Drat! Yes i was referring to the animation of the panels, and that animation alone (as well as their transparency). As i said in the OP, the animation that makes a hidden panel appear is not very smooth and the transparency causes nasty effects in the systray. Since i like the rest of the compositing features i just wanted to to run off the panel effects. but apparently that is not possible.
