When I plug in a something like USB memory stick the "device notifier" gives an option to open it in File Manager. It would be useful it it did what the desktop icons used to do i.e. give the options for mounting and then later safely remove without going through the file manager..

After the devices are mounted an eject button will appear when you hover over the device in the manager.

In fact that doesn't happen for me, I have to right click on it.

But why do I have to go through the file manager at all? Why can't I mount and safely remove from the device notifier.

You shouldn't have to go through the file manager, as Jon said mounting and unmounting can be done directly in the device notifier.
