Try to activate the desktop effects. In Kubuntu you can do this in systemsettings >> desktop or something similiar. Sorry, german language here ![]()

1. Activate desktop effects (if you have a window open, just press Alt+f3 -> Configure Window Behaviour -> Desktop Effects -> Enable Desktop Effects; or go the System Settings -> Desktop -> Desktop Effects -> Enable Desktop Effects )
2. Use a Plasma theme that has a transparent background. Suse has Aya by default, IIRC. And Aya has no transparent panel. |

oh.. so translucency comes from the theme.. I'm using Aya, i really really like it but too bad it doesn't come with this option..

You can mix and match the themes, so you can use a panel from another one. System Settings -> Advanced -> Desktop Theme Details

I have found the glassified effect gives a great translucent look, it is a download from the get new theme button in the desktop settings applet.
