KDE 3.5.x frequently resets desktop settings

Ever since KDE 3.5.9, whether it be on Ark Linux (no relation to Arch) or Yoper Linux, KDE will reset my desktop settings back to default, meaning that I will have to manually reset my panel (Kmenu, quicklaunch icons, show desktop, taskbar, system tray, then clock), my desktop theme, etc. This is very annoying, even for someone who has been using KDE 3.5.x since February of 2007. It will be especially annoying for the friend I am setting this system up for - he doesn't know much about Linux, and his Windoze XP desktop settings supposedly never reset on him.

Thanks in advance for any help.

What is the output of this command in Konsole:
Code: Select all
echo $KDEHOME

That just outputs a blank line then returns me to the prompt (running from a KDE Konsole as the problem user).

Try editing ~/.bashrc with a text editor, and add this line to the top:
Code: Select all
export KDEHOME=~/.kde/

Then logging out and in again

I added that line to my .bashrc file. If it doesn't reset my settings within the next couple days, I'll mark this as solved.

Though I always thought that .bashrc affected what I do from a terminal of some sort (whether it be Konsole, xterm, or even CLI mode (CTRL+ALT+F1))?

Bashrc is usually loaded when any shell starts up, which I suppose includes X.
