Hello!
First, I'm using KDE for over 2 years right now. I've ever thought linux is complicated compared with, for example, windows or mac, but using kde and all it's configurable features and help pages, i was able to learn all the commands and tricks for daily use in this last years. I'm only 16 and many people think I'm stupid using linux instead of windows, but if you know what to do once, you are more free in everything like you would be in windows. So: Thank you that you provided such a userfriendly environment for learning and even using linux in every way i could imagine! Now, i come to my question: I think, without any offence, that the new desktop of kde is complete ****. I like the new kde very much, but the desktop is stupid. The widgets are nice and useful, but that you can't place files or real shortcuts on it anymore is the biggest, useless lost of the new version. I know you can send application shortcuts to the desktop, but, compared to the older desktop, you can't align them to grid anymore, copy files on it or access it via the normal Desktop folder in the users profile. Why do you need to resize a single icon? For some reasons all my application icons have a different size. Is there a way to get the nice desktop of kde 3.5 back without installing 3.5? I only mean the desktop, everything else works very nice and i like the look and feel of the new kde very much ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks in advance, Jonathan

You can use a Folderview as a desktop. Right click on desktop and choose Appearance Settings. Then at the top choose Folderview under Desktop Activity. Done! It's still a bit rough around the edges, but usable.
For a bit more info, see this blog post: http://hanswchen.wordpress.com/2009/01/ ... in-kde-42/ p.s. There's a lot of new jargon in KDE4. Containments, activities, plasmoids, etc. So it is kind of awkward.
Don't look back! (Or you might see the giants whose shoulders we stand on)
