KDE 4.3 and desktop plugins

Wed Aug 05, 2009 5:31 am
I was watching the new KDE 4.3 demo and I notices there is a "desktop plugin for starfield" Does this mean that there is now support for animated desktops? If so can you point me in the direct of some plugins for that?

Here is the KDE 4.3 demo:

Yes there is support for Animated Desktops. This is also shown with the "Virus" wallpaper.

There have been support for animated wallpapers for a long time, as far as I know. "Starfield" can be found here: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/St ... ent=105973

Great news - are there any more animated wallpapers out there? Can you use a screen saver with this plugin?

Well, there are some. The virus one has already been mentioned, and the fractal and globe plugins can be both interactive as well as animated.

I'm not sure what you mean with "use a screensaver with this plugin". Do you mean using the wallpaper-plugin as your screensaver?

Hey guys,

Great idea, the one of desktop plugins; maybe this way I can get to see my dream come true: having stellarium to act as a wallpaper.

Any ideas if that is now possible, and how should I do that?

Thanks! 8)

It may be possible in principle, but someone would have to program it. Using kstars is probably more plausible, since it is a KDE application. The Marble wallpaper already uses what I think are real star positions, so it should be doable. You should probably submit a brainstorm idea about it.

I got the starfield working, thx - but how do you get the earth in the background?

I believe that is done through the Marble desktop.
