Making changes to paths consistent?

Wed Dec 02, 2009 8:17 pm
Hey everybody,

I'm new here, only having switched to KDE over the last couple weeks. So far I'm enjoying it, with a few minor glitches or configuration differences that I'm not certain about.

One of which is getting changes that I make to my Paths to remain consistent. In the System Settings UI, under Personal > About Me > Paths, I'd like to change my Documents path to my home directory. The reason for this is because I have shortcuts there that point to my storage drive which contains all my documents. When I use an app like emacs, and start a "find file" operation it automatically defaults to ~/Documents. I'd rather it defaulted to ~/ so that I can start typing my shortcuts right away.

Unfortunately, whenever I try to change the default path in the above KDE settings dialogue, it resets to its default whenever I log out and back in again (regardless of whether I have the session saved or start with a new session on each login).

I'm using Kubutntu 9.10 (KDE 4.3.2). Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Sak.

Can you ensure that you have full read-write capabilities over ~/.local and ~/.config?
In particular, check the file ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs

You can edit this file to manually change the location. Make sure to do so outside a KDE environment.

Seems that way to me.

Code: Select all
sak@steppenwolf:~$ ls -al .local/
total 16
drwxr-xr-x  3 sak sak 4096 2009-11-25 20:01 .
drwxr-xr-x 46 sak sak 4096 2009-12-02 20:13 ..

drwx------  2 sak sak  4096 2009-12-02 14:52 vlc

Unless I also need to allow my group rw access, but I'm not sure why that would be necessary.

I'll try editing the file prior to my next login and see if the setting sticks. Thanks for the tip.

Those permissions are correct. Group read write isn't needed.

Your suggestion to edit the file outside of KDE seems to have worked. I found the bug and made a note of the workaround.
