Loaded KDE desktop over Gnome in Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04
KDE window opens and then fades leaving me with a black screen.
Mouse still works and Gnome docky appears at the bottom of the screen.
Can access terminal but so green don't know where to start

How did you "load KDE desktop"? What is the KDE window? Do you have screenshots? What color is preferable?

can you open a konsole (or gnome terminal) window and run the command "kwin --replace&" (no quotes), if there are error messages post them here


also what version of kde?

Loaded KDE desktop synaptic package manager. KDE Window is the scrren after loading. No screenshots can't do anything other than bring up terminal.

Opened terminal and run kwin --replace&
received [1] 1730
The program kwin currently not installed. Install with sudo apt-get install kde-window-manager
Did so and received the following
E: unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing?
apt-get update produced
E: could not lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13: permission denied)
run --fix-missing? and received
--fix-missing?: command not found

Please prefix apt-get with sudo.

Just to throw in a bit more

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

tried update, kde-window-manager, kubuntu-desktop but system not downloading archives via web. Coming through with: failed to fetch http://nz.archive.ubuntu.com/.........

Ah, a not fetching the archive...

Have a look over at www.kubuntuforums.net - one of the friendliest forums around and it is ALL about kubuntu.

As for your particular problem - could be any number of reasons. If you are on the internet try a different repository.
